Signatures - Cliques

I have noticed that a lot of people have 'member of such and such clique' in their signatures...
I just wondered what these are all about as there seem to be a fair few of them.

Are they just the result of certain posts/conversations over time or is there more to it?

Who's a member of what 'clique' and what do they all stand for?

They are usually borne out of late-night, 20-page threads on who we fancy, what we love, what we hate, the type of horse we like and what we used to get up to in the good ole days.
