Signs that a horse has hunted before?

I know it sounds odd but my 9 yo irish TB had apparently hunted in ireland - but then haven't they all!

So, I was wondering whether it is a good idea for me to take him hunting as I've never been before and he may not have....although on a hack yesterday 9 dogs shot out of the bush and instead of spinning, he started jogging with his head right up and kept trying to follow them!

I think it should be alright, but maybe you should rent a quiet horse for your first hunt, and if your comfortable hunting, and you can normally control you TB, then I suppose you could take him out, but make sure you definitely can control him, and that you know what sort of jumps will be out there, and know what he can happily jump. If you find he it too strong on a gallop, don't take him out. If he is swopped in a different bit for a fast group hack, put him in the bit that you use him in for that.

Thanks for info. He doesn't gallop (yet) as he was a showjumper so doesn't get it! He will be a bit bouncy I would have thought but if i go out with Surrey Hunt all jumps are optional so that may be the way forward.

I was going to put him in a pelham for showing anyway so may do that for a while and see how he is....nice to have brakes if needed!!

Well, me and my mum have 5 dogs between us - and Badger hates them all and tries to stomp on their heads! He is a hunter and quite likes hounds though.. :p

I don't think you could ever know, if he's sane enough the rest of the time then go for it. :)

Only horse I've had that scared me to death came from ireland and we got him from from someone we know from our hunt, I didn't buy him for hunting though. After I'd sold him (not because he was a nutter hunting) she said "oh yes - he couldn't hunt!", well thanks for telling me that before he nearly killed me! :p

Perhaps play a recording of the hunting horn and see what he does - set this off on my mobile by mistake and my pony went bonkers, galloping around the field looking for the hunt!

And he has only been a couple of times with me..

I had always known Chloe had done a lot of hunting, and I knew the moment I was on her that I was going to be very safe. She was fast, incredibly surefooted despite the horrendous going and got herself out of various pickles that I had put herself in to. She stood stock still at the meet which all really surprised us, and just watched the hounds milling around. She just behaved superbly and I just let her get on with the job.
