My youngster has been broken in for 6 weeks and has been hacking out in company really well. Shes very steady and safe and nothing bothers her. We have seen lorrys, tractors, fast cars etc and so far has not batted an eyelid. I haven't yet hacked her out alone. Some of the horses we have hacked with however have been far from ideal. Now am coming to the point where i can no longer ride with others due to work etc. I have a 12hh pony (he is 18) and safe as houses, very calm and quiet and 100%. He is my daughters pony whom she is learning to ride.
So the question is do you think it would be a silly idea for me to ride the youngster and lead the pony (minus my daughter) ?? i would go on a well known route which 50% of it is off road. The plan is to eventually le\d the pony with my daughter riding.
We do live in a rural area so quiet lanes with the odd tractor.
I have ridden and led before (2 17hh horses) so i know i am able to do it, just is it a good idea??

Thanks

I would hack the youngster on her own first - the last thing you want if she has a bit of a moment is another to worry about handling too! If that concerns you then perhaps start with leading inhand a familiar route first or ride with a friend on foot with you? High vis up, breath and enjoy - she sounds like she has been ace so far!

I think I would get your youngster used to hacking alone first; it sounds like you have put all the prep in so it shouldn't be too much of an issue. Is there someone who could accompany you on foot the first couple of times?

I'd just worry if something happened to upset your youngster you wouldn't be able to put all your effort into reassuring her. It would be awful if something happened now and could really knock your (and your youngster's) confidence.

Once your youngster has been out himself and is comfortable then I think the ride and lead would be good.

This is good advice! x

Hack out alone first and if it goes ok then no harm in trying. Ive lead off my youngster and she was fine however my other mare was not best pleased and had to drag her along as she is the one i lead everything off normally. Do a short route for the first time and just take your time im sure you will be fine.
