Hugo has a selection of numnahs and saddle cloths which I rotate as they become grubby, none of which are particularly thick or padded. He seems very happy and comfy in his saddle, which fits well and I really look upon the saddle cloth as more of a 'sweat absorber'. Some others at the yard seem to have 2 or even 3 really thick, quilted pads under their saddle.

Is there a reason they would do this, or is it just to make things more comfy for the horse? Or am I missing something?

I know when I had P and we were trying to sort out her 'problem' we tried raising the saddle at the front with different pads and risers (minimal difference), but these are people whose horses are fine.

If the saddle fits adding extra layers or thick pads will make it tight,so not comfy for the horse.
If it doesnt fit a temporary option is to use pads.Sometimes a horse with a sensitive back may benefit from an extra thick pad,but this should be taken into consideration by the saddle fitter.
You are right with what you are doing:)

I have different numnahs for different points in Sophie's condition. One thick pad, a thick half numnah and three cotton numnahs. It saves me spending fifty pounds three times a year just to flock the saddle a bit(she does have the saddler once year though).
