So I subscribe to Horse and Hound - avidly read the from cover to cover. For the past twelve months or so I've enjoyed reading the hunting bits. I've always enjoyed watching meets etc - love see everyone human and horse looking smart. Think it must be amazing fun.
This is where it gets ridiculous - I'd love to have a go but would be mortified if I was part of chasing or killing a fox! I know that's the whole idea.

Question is - do drag hunts just follow a scent and no living creature harmed?
What do hunts actually do in light of the ban? Most coverage in H&h never seems to mention fox or stag - but on the riding part.

Please explain!

Drag hunts follow a scent, never live quarry.

Fox hunts SHOULD follow a scent if they have a full pack of hounds, but many, many hunts are hunting fox illegally.

So if you don't want to hunt fox, you need to check with the pack you plan to go with unless they are a drag pack.

The trouble is that unless they know you, they are unlikely to tell you the truth if they hunt illegally.

As cptrayes has said :) I hunt with bloodhounds, and they follow the scent of a human runner, and you can see the hounds don't 'catch' anything :) Give hunting a go, it's very fun!

Current horse is retired. So I'd be looking at a hireling.
Think I'll have to do more research and see if hirelings are availbe for drag hunts.
Thanks for replies :)

Hirelings are available for drag hunts and also trail hunting :)
I see you are in Warks, if you fancy going south then worth looking up John North (joint master of the Kimblewick) based in Oxfordshire, who does hirelings - for his hunt and also to go out with SC&RMAs Drag Hunt & occasionally others too :)

As you are in Warwickshire a fantastic drag pack to go out with are the Farmers Bloodhounds:

They actually have a few videos on their site explaining the type of hunting they do and the sort of riding you can expect. Very friendly bunch as well.

And if you are interested in a hireling I can fully recommend Jill Carenza. Her horses are well known on the various hunting fields and all have a sterling reputation.
