Silly question of the day - differences between makes of brewers yeast?

Apologies for the silly question, I have recently started feeding brewers yeast for my shetlands sweet itch & to my broodmare & gingerknobbermare to help with lami & the vits etc it contains.

Have been feeding natural horse supplies brewers yeast since Jan & haven't seen any itching from the shetland since the first week or so, so cautiously optimistic that it is helping.

Natural horse supplies bags are quite small & with 3 on it a bag doesn't last long, so am thinking of getting a 25kgs sack from charnwood milling.

Is there a difference between different makes? Should it still work on the shetlands sweet itch or should I keep her on the natural horse stuff just in case?!

Blueberries & strawberries as an apology for daft question! :)

Should be no difference at all. I used to use the natural horse supplies one for my sweetitch mare, as with one horse on it a 25kg sack would last years! If you do buy in bulk then bear in mind it will need to be stored in an airtight container so it doesn't attract moisture and go off.
This year I am mineral balancing instead so I'll be interested to see if that helps!

The brewer's yeast I have bought has varied each time. I have used two different suppliers more than once and each batch has been different. Sometimes it smells really beer-like (my ponies' fave), one lot smelled peppery (ponies were not keen on this) and the latest lot hardly smells of anything at all. Can't say whether or not the differing batches had different effects.

I use Gold Label Brewers Yeast and it seemed to help last spring/summer. I;ve never used any other brand but don't imagine that there is much difference between them all other than the price.

Thepony, good point about what to store it in, I was going to put it in a metal dusting but this may not be the best idea then!

Does anyone know roughly how big a 25kg sack from charnwood milling is? I assume slightly smaller than a bag of horse feed as it is powder? :)

There are differences in brewers yeast, a supplier of Nettex brewers yeast (Blakemore's) posted this:-
'Newsflash'
Unfortunately the Price of Premium Brewers Yeast from our supplier has gone up by 50%. This is due to a shortage of the raw material on the world market. There is inferior yeast available that is very bitter and unpalatable to many horses and we have decide to try and stick with this supplier.(This really is the best yeast you can buy even at this price.) We hope that you are not too upset by the apparently big and sudden price rise. Regards Mark

I know there have been some issues with horses not eating b.y., so this possibly explains why.

A Charnwood 25 kg sack is about the same size as a standard bag of horse food.I feed a 50 mg scoop a day to each of my 4 horses and it seems to last about 6 months.I have just ordered another bag and it has cost me £53 including delivery.I keep it in a plastic dustbin in the feed store and it keeps well.

I fed Charnwood millings BY and the difference to my horse was remarkable - fabulous coat, really shiny and healthy and not a glimpse of the usual sweet itch.

Then last year I used Nettex and saw hardly any change to him what-so-ever :(

This year I am going back to using Charnwoods. It takes a while to slowly introduce this make as my chap isn't impressed by the taste but the extra effort is well worth the result.

No idea why I saw such a difference. I had assumed they would be the same thing but they were different colours, texture and smell!!

Mine has always come in a thick brown paper sack lined with plastic inside one of those white woven bags so I fill up a container to use daily (lasts about a month) and then tie up and roll down the neck of the poly bag inside the sack, roll down the top of the paper sack and store inside a dustbin; it's never taken any harm this way but I think if you used it direct from that sack every day it might not keep well as long as it does using a smaller tub because the air would always be getting to it.
They're about three quarters the size of a feed bag but seem twice as heavy for their size! This bag is now almost a year old and hasn't changed from when I first had it; there's usually a long sell by date on them but you could always sell some to friends to help out.

That sounds similar to the Charnwood.

It definitely has a very beery smell (I had to move it out of the house when it was first delivered as OH complained!) and the texture reminds me of baking soda or cornflour. The colour is a light beige wheras nettex was a darker beige and more grainy :)

Thats it, cornflour!! Was trying to work out texture  Yup sounds the same.

Going to get some ordered as sounds like the CM stuff is good quality so will hopefully work. If not internationalnevofmystery will just have to have her own little supply of the natural horse stuff :D while the others stick with the charnwood!

Brewers yeast is what it says - yeast which has already been used by a brewer. Every batch will be different depending on what alcoholic beverage has been made with it, the quality of the other ingredients in the drink and the quality of the baking of the yeast after it is finished with (it's sometimes overcooked and smells burnt).

I swapped to yea-sacc because my horses don't like some BY varieties. I have no idea if it works for sweet itch but it does wonders for the guts of my laminitic. You feed less because it's "live" and it is totally consistent.
