Silly question i know!..lol...Are all horses a year older on Jan 1st...ie would my 18mth old x breed be refered to as a 2yr old now? or is that purley TB's

Jan the first is for Tb's, May first for all other breeds

My horses never get older - if I buy a 10 year old, I sell it 2 years later it is still a 10 year old.

Reminds me of a dealer I used to work for. When asked how old a horse was he used to say 'how old do you want it to be?' Everything he had in was usually 7 or 8... irrespective of actual age...

To answer the original question I tend to use 1 Jan to age a horse in general. So a friend of mine who has a warmblood we now class as being 4yo and eligible to start BDing. He's in his fourth year if not strictly speaking four until March.

It is not a very accurate way of telling age, especially as they get older.

ahhh, I see! what about corformation or something??? there must be some way of estimating the age, I read briefly about the teeth somewhere so that's why I mentioned it!

His horses were pretty cheap - I don't recall many of them being vetted before purchase

He did seem to have lots of happy customers though... including me!

Registration is really the only way - well until we teach horses to talk! There are ways, but nothing is exact so can be fudged.

ohh rightio! I don't have much experience in buying horses! (as you can see) My parents brought my pony, under guidence of my instructor!

According to passports - 1 Jan. All breed passports now seem to do this even when provided with actual date of birth.

This means that I could ride Chancer in January 2008 at shows even though he is not actually 4 until June as for showing rules he is 4 on 1 January.

Well on the topic of sawing off legs - Cambiaso's stallion who broke a leg in the Argentine Open:

Had it's leg sawed off, and will be getting a stump!
