Silly Rein Cleaning Question

OK, I'm a bit embarrassed to be asking this - but what methods do people use for keeping the rubber bit of rubbered reins clean without them perishing really quickly?

damp sponge or if really grubby a nail brush

I just use warm water and a tiny bit of soap. Wring the sponge out as best as you can then scrub away. If there is ground in sweat and grime I use the scourer side of sponge to get it off. Afterwards I dry it off with a towel so it's not sitting there wet!

Would you just use normal soap, something like washing up liquid?

I'm only asking because I've recently been faced with a really dirty set of rubber reins (not mine, someone else's I hasten to add) and my usual method of wiping with warm water isn't up to the job.
