Simple exercises to improve core stability please

I'm not one for going to classes, so would like some tips for exercises I can do. Do those large rubber ball things help? I'm not so great at mounting from the ground nowadays, and there are times when you just have to, so ideas for that also appreciated - and, yes, I have bought a shorter horse
 
Well I couldn't get on a 14hh pony from the floor but I do have 2 decent mounting blocks, one in the yard and the other in the school. For core stability try plank either on the elbows or hands, aim to hold it for initially 10 secs and gradually build up to a minute as you get stronger. Don't let you bottom rise or drop, you need to engage those core muscles so you are straight just like a plank. Roll ups and roll downs lying on the floor on your back are also good, try to do this very slowly putting each vertebra down at a time, try not to flop back when you are nearly at the floor and if you are struggling to get up, don't strain your back, grab a leg and pull yourself up. If you google pilates I'm sure you'll find pictures of these exercises. However, I find the discipline of going to a regular class is much more motivating than doing it on my own.Yes, the balls are great if you use them properly and most importantly, regularly.
 
Thanks oldie48. Sad thing about mounting blocks is that you can't take them with you on a hack! I'll crack on with some exercises, my worry is that doing them at home, you can't be 100% sure of doing them correctly. Just don't like classes.
 
Leg raises, sit on the edge of the table (or similar stable item) and raise your extended straight legs 10" off the floor and hold. You'll feel it the next day!
You need to think about the muscle you want to target whilst you do an exercise, imagine making it smaller in diameter (this is really poor english, I hope you understand!) rather than just activating it.
Working on your core is really good for your lower back and preventing problems.
 
google "sensible pilates exercises" and you'll get some good videos which show you how do do things properly so you don't injure yourself. Depending on how fit you are, you may find some of the exercises quite tough but as someone in my late 60's I've transformed my strength and core stability using pilates and my riding has improved as a result.
