Does anyone know of any good schooling exercises? My pony is coming back into work from laminitis. He has been walking for the past 2 months, the vet has now said to get him trotting and slowly get him back in to full work. He is getting quiet bored in the arena just doing circles, so just wondered if anyone knew of any good exercises to keep his mind working while in walk and trot. Thanks

Try including lots of transitions between halt, walk and trot; this will keep him interested and listening, but also start working his back end properly again. You can also do this out hacking when you get to that stage with him. For example, after warming up do 10 strides in walk, then ten strides in trot, then back to walk again and carry on; then when he's got that then go from trot to halt and then trotting again, or when you're going across the school do a transition at X... and so on. You could also rein back for a few steps as well.

Perhaps get hold of some walk and trot tests and have a play with those for variety? Can move on to prelims when ready to re-intro canter.

With idiotpony I've made a + shape out of poles to trot over, spiraling in and out. I also have cones out to either bend around or use to legyield in and out of.

I also put poles out on a fan shape around a corner. Or use two poles to create a straight train track part in my figure 8 shapes that we either use to practise our halfhalts or to reinback in.

I've gotten quite creative at thinking up ways to amuse him!
