Does anyone use Simple System feeds for their horses? Do you have any experiences...good or bad? I'm considering changing over to their feeds, so would appreciate anyones views on it. Thanks!

Absolutely brilliant stuff. Have used quite a bit from the range over the years and would swap my boys over to it completely if there was a stockist local to me. Jane is very knowledgeable and helpful too.

I think it's rather basic TBH. I know its MEANT to be "simple", but I think you can get the same things for cheaper. Like the Lucerne nuts - well thats just plain Alfalfa. The grass nuts again, I can buy these own brand from my local shop for about 1/4 the price.

I would highly recommend their food, especially for laminitis-prone and older equines. This is the only food that my 31 year old pony can tolerate now, and she looks fabulous on it & gallops round her field, bucking like she did 20 years ago (despite suffering a bad attack of laminits less than a year ago, before changing to this food)!

My boys have been on it since last September and have never looked better. Cairo has more stamina and moves more easily - the instant linseed is great for joints.

I have a clydie and a cob so they have lucie stalks, green gold and total eclipse. I also feed extra brewers yeast and linseed.

Mine do have black sunflower seeds and a few nuts for their ball in winter - the grass ones SS do are too fattening for them.

I did try SS's version of speedibeet, but went back to Speedibeet as I found that product better - Chancer seems to put more weight on and be a little lively on SS's version.

What I like is that I can give huge feeds in winter that take them a while to munch up but they don't put on weight.

It is a little more expensive than Dengi products - in winter it works out about £1.50 per horse per week on the way I feed, but personally I feel money well spent.

I started using it for my boy about 4 weeks ago - I love it, and more importantly so does he! I use the Luci-bix, instant linseed and total eclipse - His coat has never looked better (and I've use oils and coat suppliments for years), he's got more 'sane' energy (was a bit of a fruit-loop before) and his digestive system has improved (more like a horse, less like a cow!) I can thoroughly recommend the feeds and the people are very helpful as well.

Do you still have to buy from them in bulk? I know when I investigated using them (which was quite some time ago!) it wasn't worth it for me because I would have to order so much in one go.

Think you need to order £70 - for me that is not difficult as I buy 4 lucie stalks, 2 green gold and then my instant linseed, brewers yeast and total eclipse - I get the bigger bags of supplements as I have people who share them with me as they like to feed linseed and brewers yeast.

PG keep an eye on the use by dates if you are buying the big packs. I found I wasnt getting throguh it quickly enough and went back to the smaller ones.

I've just starting using their linseed product for joints and both my horses look very very well.
As for their customer service again excellent and knowledgeable. My only problem was with a delivery company they used and they gave them a good 'kick up the arse', so very good IMO

I use it for all ours, and love it. OH was raelly stubborn about swapping his mare onto it, as she was on pasture mix etc when she came to us. I did it in the end, after about 6 months, without telling him

and within a few weeks he commented that she must really be settling in with us now as she is so much more chilled

Told him in the end about the change of feed. In fact, even down at the yard we bought her from, one of the other liveries didn't believe it was her, and said 'but she looks so good!', and she is ridden considerably less now than she was then and is much less fit, so I am attributing the improvement to the food.
It keeps my mad arab relatively sane, suits the lami pony as well, and certainly doesn't do my WB any harm.
I think how much you have to order at a time depends where you live and what courier company they use to get it to you. I have to fill a pallet. The nly thing I do is use a seperate balancer (D&H one) as the amounts of all the SS feeds I would need to give to get the RDA of everything into them, would result in my horses not fitting through the gate! But mine are all very good do-ers.

I have used it for about 10 years. Love it. horses look fantastic on it and remain chilled.

Spaniel - there is a Simple Systems South west - they cover Devon, cornwall and Somerset. You have to place an order for a minimum of £60 made up on any of there products. and delivery is free. I ordered 8 lucinuts and 2 red label nuts yesterday and they arrived today £69 tel 01626 871302

I started using it earlier this year. I bought the blue and red bag grass nuts and the lucienuts to starts with. My girls love it.
Im going to have all of them on it for next winter - will make it so much easier for me.
I dont buy in bulk, just buy what I want. Im lucky as there is a supplier just down the road from where my horses are kept.

Ours are on SS too, and we find it fab. Especially in winter when you can make massive trugs of soaked Luciebix and the like, for the horses to graze on overnight along with their haylage.

For anyone thinking of feeding SS feed, if you go to one of their demos you won't ever think about feeding your horses any other way.

I thought it would be fantastic idea to put my horse on it...so bought the appropriate feeds, spoke to the nutritionist (very helpful) and thought brilliant, here we go! My horse refused to eat any of it!!! She would totally turn her nose up and stand there as if I was giving her rubbish to eat!!! We did it gradually etc etc but no good.
So I have had to re-think and now have bowls of simple system food for my dinner every night!!!!

I love SS, as others have said you can give fatties a good feed without worry. I use sugar beet and lucy stalks for my fatties. The Horses have sugarbeet, rough stuff and lucie nuts. They are all looking great, and even the young TB is not fizzy or silly. They all have total eclipse feed balancer. The only non ss products I use are magnesium oxide and speedi beet in the summer, so I can make a little bit up fresh every day without waiting 24 hours.

I agree that some products are a little exspensive for what is basicaly chopped hay/lucerne stalks etc, however I have not found any company that sells these products without adding oil/mollasses and all types of other rubbish that my ponies dont need.

All the andalusians on my yard are on it and looking fantastic including the Stallions.

They are all just on the luci-bix soaked and lucichaff with mug of total eclipse to make sure they get all their vitamins.

All sane and happy and lovely shiney coats.

[/ QUOTE ] Dengie's AlfaBeet is just alfafa and unmolassed sugar beet without anything else added and their alfalfa pellets also claim to be pure alfafa. Worth bearing in mind for anyone who can't get SS feeds.

I tried it, but K didn't really like it and I was throwing away about a scoop of food a day off the floor where he'd spat it out!

Also, I found the luci bix a faff, and I could never get it just right.
I think their principles are very good though, so I'm now feeding alfa beet which he will (just) eat with top spec balancer. He looks great on it.
I also feed grass nuts in a snack ball over winter.

I tried it for about 6 months, but my mare never really took to the feeds - more was spread around the stable quite often then was eaten. Plus she seemed to diminish over the 6 months, went very very quiet, lost muscle tone and just seemed depressed. She is a very laid back mare anyway and I think whilst the feeds are great for the fizzy types in that they calm them down, with her it just made her comatose!!!

I also had a problem with the Luciebixs in that they appeared to make her footy.
