When I was hunting for a newer trailer I came across an immaculate single Ifor williams (2003) for £2k. Was very tempted as I tow with a car. The thing that put me off though was the thought that if something happened and I had to get out quick, there was no where to go other than the groom door, ie in a double you can always go across to the other side.
I had a Ifor one last year for a while and i couldn't fault it,i know so many people hate them and are very anti and so was i until it was really my only option of transport for a while. It was never unsturdy,it towed beautifully behind my Shogun,i had a 14.2 in the trailer and she had masses of room, she travels better on her own,i couldn't tow a 505 cos of my age hence the single.I would def have one again,i now have a VW lorry due to me wanting a bit of luxury living for when i'm away at camp!! I really didn't want to sell it deep down and i was a bit lost without it for a while but it went to a good home for another 14.2hh pony.It was a 1998 and i paid £1700 for it and sold it for £1650 so not a bad sale i thought,i did put 2 new tyres and a spare on with sale so i think i was evenish in the end.I found mine on e-bay and drove all the way to Lancashire for it as there are not many down her in the south east.Noticed most of them are up north, their actually quite rare i was told my IW as they are only built to order unlike the 505's and 510'2 supposedly.Don't let people put you of them go see one and try it,even some of my friends were suprised by how roomy mine was,it's only half a partition in width smaller after all.I am however against the older Rice type wooden ones, now they are dangerous,i saw a few of them and they are not sturdy.Mine was aluminium and was very well made as all IW's are.
I have had 2 Ifor Williams 401s and I loved them ! Really easy to tow with a car, and a big plus you know if the car fits though a gap then the trailer definitely will too. They are a good size for a single (hence being marketed as a mare and foal trailer); my wide welsh cob always had plenty of room. How about trying some Ifor Williams stockists, they sometimes get ones that have been part-exed for sale. I got my first from a local paper, then when that was stolen (Grrrrr) I bought a brand new one. If I didnt live where I did and couldn't face reversing a trailer up to my house, I would definitely have another. There is one on horsemart at the moment for £1200 (although it says wood panel exterior which sounds a bit odd).
