single vs double

Double everytime, single trailers dont look as stable, make it harder to load and if you have only one horse at least you could maybe travel a bale of hay or something in the other part.

someone collected a yealing tb from me a long time ago in a singe trailer, she was stamping about in the trailer, but not thrashing about and the trailer looked very unstable!

Unless you were given a free single or something and liked it i would definitely go for a double. Someone at my old yard had a single trailer and it didn't look that bad to be honest, I think it was the mare and foal one (ifor).. However I have a double and wouldn't go for a single, besides you may want to take a friend too one day, which you could never in the single!

Goodluck though.x

Double, if your horse is a bit of a bad traveller you can use all the room and usually they travel better diagonally.

and there was me thinking it was a post about "vodka"!!! lol
i would prefer a double trailer, but it depends on how your horse travels, a friend had a mare that hated travelling in her single ifor, yet when she brought a double one she travelled fine. maybe her horse felt too enclosed?

would you prefer a double trailer or a single

ifor or other

why why not

I have a single IWT and it is brilliant. I have said this before and will say it again - I don't believe that anyone who claims they are unstable can have ever actually towed one.

My mare had never travelled in her life until I got my trailer so we had all the unbalanced scrambling about and stressing in the trailer, no matter how carefully I drove for a couple of months, and the trailer has never, ever felt unbalanced.

On the day I bought it I drove home up the motorway with the trailer empty and lorries overtaking me and I never felt it move. When I take my girl to the vets we go on a very fast dual carriageway, also with artics overtaking us and again, it is perfectly stable. I have never had any cause for concern and know that I made the right decision when I bought this trailer.

I don't understand how it can make loading more difficult, and the stall is wider than in a normal trailer, making it more inviting for the horse to go in to.

I could go on and on and on....... I LOVE mine!!!!!

Must add I have never towed any other make of single trailer, so all my comments refer to the HB401.

I would not consider buying a single, even though I rarely travel more than one horse. My horse prefers to travel without a partition, he likes lots of room and if you wanted to sell it on at some point, I don't think it would get much interest unless it was dirt cheap.

Not quite on topic but just a quick question... Those of you that do have a single, can you pull it legally on a normal driving license? Post 1998. Thanks :)

to those who dislike single trailers and saying they are unstable - have they towed one - i had a double 505 and my horse only liked travelling without partition - she moved around and i was worried that she would fall over i got a single and she has never travelled so well. There is plenty of room she travels diagonally. I can tack up in it if i need to. Its lighter, very stable if the landrover can get thru a gap so can the trailer. I dont have the need to travel two so a 401 is a great alternative. Its plenty big enough for my 15.3hh. idxtb
And the reason you dont see many for sale is people hang onto them - they actually hold their prices much better than the doubles because there arent as many around.

We've got a single and its great. Pulls well behind the Mondeo, there are no loading problems and the horse gets much more room than he gets when he's hitching a lift and travelling in half a double with his mate.

If we were staying as a one horse family then I wouldn't even consider a double. However, we've recently become a 1.5 horse family so are looking to trade up to a double and will have to buy a 4x4 too.

I don't think its true to say singles don't sell on well either. They are relatively rare and do seem to hold a decent second hand value :)

Kub- in response to your question if your combined weight of trailer plated weight and car is less than 3.5tonne you can drive on license post 1998

I don't understand how it can make loading more difficult, and the stall is wider than in a normal trailer, making it more inviting for the horse to go in to.

Because you can swing half the partition sideways in a double so the horse has full width (2 stalls wide) to go into (so long as first horse in not second!)

I personally prefer double trailers, seem less claustrophobic to me, but I'm not a horse...

I've got a Cheval Liberte mare & foal trailer which is in between a single and a double!
I find it perfect for transporting my big warmblood cos he has plently of room when travelling, I can tack him up comfortably inside the trailer, but it's still lightweight to tow and very stable.

Works for me :-)

Would never even consider a single, and IW are one of the best makes.

Kub - I still think you have to have a towing license

I have a single 401 ifor, and its FAB. Its light, very stable and all our horses have travelled very well in it including the little rescue pony who was so scared when we first got her of anything with wheels let alone a trailer for her!! In the end she loaded herself and wouldn't come out without permission (not bad for a shetland x!)
My Meg loves it and its great as we are not a 4x4 owner so the mondeo tows it. I couldn't afford to run a 4x4 let alone buy a double.
The only thing that is obviously going against it is the fact that you can't take a friend or daughters pony or take a bale of hay in the spare bit! But the trailer works for us at the mo and I also like to add, I think singles keep their value now more than ever before!
