Please can some one help me
My mare has had sinusitis since the Oil Seed Rape came into flower at end of April. I took her to vets the begining of May and was given 7 days of antibiotics and told to rest her for two weeks. The antibiotics improved it but didn't clear it up. Anyway I continued to rest her but gave her some anti-histamines as I thought the rape may have been the cause and again these helped but didn't clear it up so I took her back to vets at the end of May.
This time we saw the top man in the practice and he scoped her, couldn't see anything particularly untoward. So he x-rayed her head and although he could see that the sinus was blocked he couldn't see the cause (he had said sometimes its caused by a problem with a tooth root).
Anyway he said he'd rather get it cleared up with a stong dose of antibiotics than give her a general and drill it out. (Ouch, me too) So he gave us 20 TMPS powders and I had to give her 1 a day for 5 days then 5 days off and repeat 3 times. And I was told to work her, not excessively but work her to help blow it out.
Her left nostril is still running, though has improved to an extent. Today will be her last antibiotic on her third course, so tomorrow is the start of 5 days off and then she has 5 more TMPS and thats it.
Today though she has two small holes above her left eye about and inch apart and there appears to be pussy stuff coming from them. It is a similar colour to what is coming from her nose, not a lot but it is there.
These are not cuts or old injuries.
My question is this, Is it physically possible for these 'wounds' above her right eye to be related to her left runny nose? And if so what should I do about it?
I have rang the vets and cannot get an appointment til next week and the guy I want to see is not doing calls today.

Oooo that sounds chronic to me. I'm not sure that I would be happy to wait until Monday - let alone later in the week.

Can someone else come out?

I would insist on an appointment before monday tbh and then keep the wounds open and flushed untill the vet sees them. They could be an abcess type thing which is trying to drain out through the easiest route which would make me think the horse must be in some considerable discomfort if its not coming down the nose!

I agree completely with Span's. At the very least you need an in depth talk about what is happening and preferably tonight with a follow up visit tomorrow. Good luck, keep us posted.

Yeah, I've tried to ring the vet twice but he is operating. I think to be honest he will let me go in the morning or even later this evening but its the rotwieler of a receptionist that won't let me see him till next week.

I would like to add though that although Kate has developed these holes, she is still, and has been throughout her usual chirppy self. In no way does she appear to be in discomfort, else I would have just took her down and waited as long as necessary to be seen.
Thanks though guys, I'll let you know how this progresses

Sinus problems are very common this time of year, for exactly the reason you state.
I have known horses with these problems trained on Ventipulmin, dont think it really makes much difference. Most vets advise that the nose running is a good thing, stops pressure building up in the head.
I assume the vet scoped both nostrils?
I have known a horse with holes as you say, his were linked to a head fracture, probably involving his sinuses (could put fist into hole between eyes).
At the very least I would carry on with the powders without a break, and put on a course of Bute.
