Sir Monty Roberts

This man is the nicest person you could wish to meet and what ever you think of him he carries out his work with nothing but kindness. His 'past' was pretty horrible it has to be said and he set about on his journey with nothing but kindness in mind. He loves horses and truly believes what he is doing is for their benefit. His story made me cry and I've seen him tell it on horse and country and he is nothing but genuine. I know he gets slated but I have never figured out why. I live for kindness, in people and animals and anyone that advocates that is good in my mind.

Do people "slate" his horsemanship? I don't think that could be denied really.
I was thinking about the doubts cast on his honesty by his family and others, I think that this would count against him as they must look into background when considering the honours list? (Mind you, some mistakes made in the past!).
What about Sir Pat Parelli?? He went to see the Queen too...

The fella deserves more than any honour!!
Questions or not... you cannot dispute what he does or how he does it!!
You only have to watch the full set of monty's story on H&C TV to begin to understand the depth of what he stands for!

I've watched and taken great interest in the Parelli's and they have me facinated in the methods they use.... in fact I could sit and watch the pair of em work for hours, I wouldn't get bored!
However Monty has something different..... for an old guy with a fairly troubled past, there's something about his attitude and his methods which I think probably click within anyone horsey. He has a way of holding your attention without question, and triggering thoughts, you come away from Monty thinking ........."I wonder", and I'd bet most people who have met the the great man... cannot wait to get back to there horses!

I have met him personally and spent a lot of time with him, I am afraid Merlin won on the 'I will NOT be clipped' stakes.

He was honest though and said that he really didnt think that he could help as M is sooooo terrified of the clippers he loses all control.

Better that he told me that than give me hope and let me get my head stoved in!!!

I have used his methods with success and he has helped many horses but I think that when he decided to go and break a wild mustang this was very unneccessary and cruel. To drive a wild animal away from its herd and put a pretty large man on its back is cruel. I also think his whole idea of breaking in a horse and sitting on it within 30 minutes without building it up isn't wise either, whats the rush?. He has done some good things but he is a show man.

I totally agree and having read his book, watched him on TV and seen him live I have no doubt in my mind he is totally genuine and honest and truly only wants to make a difference to the horses. I think he is fabulous. Like you I am fascinated by the parelli's too, not all of it and not for all horses but I never get bored.

Thinking about it a bit more, I wouldn't knight him. Yes, he's done many good things, but so have a lot of people. I don't really believe he's been totally honest about his life history, the book written by his family makes compelling reading and they quote indisputable facts that prove he told some porkies, so although he has done good things I personally believe it's built on a legend he created.
I don't mean the allegations of bad treatment by his father by the way. Take for example the fact that he didn't ever go to the desert and study wild horses. He was at school with an excellent attendance record throughout that time, he has changed the names of the boys who were supposedly with him 3 times (as various of them have denied the story) and in the latest version of names none of them were old enough to drive to the desert - so how did they get there?
He didn't travel the country in a railway carriage winning in shows and giving clinics (show records prove this, apart from recollections of everyone who ever knew him when he was young!).
He didn't study with the horsemen he claims were his teachers in the book.
I think the acclaim of his fans, the beautiful ranch that he owns and hopefully the satisfaction of a job well done should be reward enough for him.
I'm now trying to think of what horse personality I would knight. Probably some unsung hero or heroine toiling away in welfare who I've never heard of.

There are lots of people who give up everything for the love and aid of animals and live in a very frugal manner to do it. These are the ones that deserve a knighthood. Don't forget, 'Monty Roberts' is a business and and his merchandise is not cheap, he is in fact a very wealthy man.

i agree putting it like that, a knighthood is a bit strong. I like him because he is kind and I like kind genuine people. But yes you are right and regardless of whether the stories are right or wrong there would be more deserving unsung hero's. That are equally as kind.

I've been waiting for someone who is arguing for Monty knighthood (or even deification!) to come on and tell us how nasty H+H' ers are.

I think he's as worthy of receiving an honourary knighthood as many other people. Plenty dodgy politicians are knighted or made Lords so I don't see why someone with a slightly untruthful background should be denied this if the good things these people have done by far outweigh the bad things.

Plenty knights are liars I'd imagine; doesn't strip them of having done plenty of good in their lives too

If they do...
Monty Roberts for Queen then!

You're right though Tia, there is plenty of precedent for honouring people who are rather economical with the truth. I have sometimes wondered if Monty Roberts ever dreamed that his book would be so popular? Maybe he thought a bit of legend around him would create an interest in his horse training, never dreaming it would get out to so many people.
I read Horse Whispers and Lies, and there seems more than a grain of truth in that book to me.
