My younger sister bought a little terrier (a brindle JRT cross) about 6 months ago as a companion for her Papillon from a family who said they simply couldnt cope with him anymore. The reasons they gave for selling him was that he was too hectic and the woman couldnt walk him because he pulled so much on the lead; so much so that he pulled the pushchair over with her young baby inside!
She took him home, had him vacc'd/chipped/neutered and hoped he would settle in with regular exercise (he was walked perhaps once a week in his previous home!). She had been informed however that his recall was hit and miss at best so she kept him on a long line.
Everything went well for a time but then he started to exhibit what she called 'aggression' to other dogs and so had to be kept away from them. On lead he pulled like an absolute steam train regardless of the gadgets she tried. She let him off in an enclosed area and he had zero recall, only coming back to her after he got bored with exploring. He escaped from her house and wouldnt come back no matter what she tried - he made it over a main road with her in hot pursuit and she only managed to catch him when he went down a dead end street.
Ive taken him out and his aggression is virtually non existent with me (as an assertive and unflappable leader), but he will fixate on other dogs and snap at them if they are within reach. I believe its purely down to lack of social skills and not something that cant be overcome.
He is a typical terrier and has a very high/strong prey drive - he has chased and attacked cats when he visited my parents house, and goes beserk barking and throwing himself at the patio doors if a cat comes into his garden.
He is impossible to distract on walks using toys or food
She has him on the waiting list for a local rescue but I thought I would give it a shot at putting him on here as I feel he could be a great little dog with an experienced owner (my sister definitely isnt a good/experienced enough owner/handler for him).
He is only young, around 2 I think now, and is in Plymouth
If anyone has any suggestions they would be greatly received
