I have a big moving horse and i struggle to do sitting trot on him. I can sitting trot on my mare, in fact i prefer to do sitting trot on her. My gelding is 18hh and elevated but it isn’t impossible to sit to him because other riders can just not me....:(

So in order to help me with this my friend has agreed to lunge me tonight but i am not sure the best way to do this......

(I am planning on riding without reins so i don’t hold on with them)

Should i put him in side reins to help keep him balanced?

Should i leave him free to poke his nose up?

Or none of the above.

Also, any advice on what i need to be doing with my body to be able to sit to him.

I have a very nice Ideal Suzannah dressage saddle so hopefully that with help but i really don’t want to slow his trot down just so i can sit to it.

Any advice greatly received.

HELP!!!!!!!

definitely put him in side reins - he'll be balanced and softer through his back so you'll be more likely to be able to sit on him

I would have reins - just to hold onto the buckle - helps keep your arms more stable and is psychologically more reassuring, so you don't start gripping with your thighs

Lots of excercises to help you sit - eg hold the front of the saddle, while in halt, lift both legs up and away from the saddle so that you can feel your seatbones on the saddle. Drop them both back and down, relaxed, so that your thighs hang long and loose either side of the saddle, so you can still feel your seatbones. Then relax your seat muscles and smile :)

I would recommend that you let your boy trot slowly while you get the rhythm and softness in your back - once you can sit to a slow trot, you can add the power.... bit like learning to drive in a Clio not a ferrari - possible to do it, but much easier without the power behind the accelerator!

Let your pelvis rock back as he pushes forward - the more you try to sit, the harder it is - "allow" yourself to go with him, don't force it :)

My god if i hold on to the front of the saddle and lift my legs up i think i will pass out... lol (I will give it a go).

I am relying on the person lunging me to keep him in a steady rhythmical trot so i can think about what i am doing.

So i will relax my thigh and try and think about my hips moving with his movement.

I was planning on leaving the reins attached but not holding them so i might tie them in a knot so i have them if i need them.

I really hope a rabbit or something doesn’t pop out.....

I have tried sitting trot on my own with reins etc and whenever i take my feet out of the stirrups he stops i think he wonders where i have gone. He is quite a forward horse so i find this strange and then need to put my leg on and i loose my nice rhythmical trot.

Lots to work on.
