The situation: horses in field 24/7, been there since start of summer 2012, unrugged, have never left the field, no farrier, no vet, very muddy so covered hooves and they avoid the gate, water trough unchecked (don't know if this is necessary), have had hay so assume have been checked over, was told by owner the one time she came over that they would be in field until autumn time (still here!). Heard that they are dutch horses, they are pony size, I know the owner takes dutch warmbloods to train but these look too small, might be young'uns though (have no idea but I feel they might be). Not underweight, don't seem ill or lame at all.

I have had a couple of people voice their concerns to me - I don't know the owner, but I am horsey whereas said people are not! But I'm still a novice. I think this is a normal situation, they look in good health, there are a few piles of hay by the gate, everyone has had bad weather. I just want to clarify this though so I can be clear in telling said people (family/neighbour) they are ok. Is this an ok situation? I am not interfering at all, just self-educating :)

If the horses have food and water and company of their own kind and are a reasonable weight then it is no one else's business but the owners the fine niceties of their care. It sounds as if this is the case, the only thing I would be trying to do is get a look at their hooves in case they were grossly overgrown. But apart from that they sound ok if less often checked than ideally.

No issue, thank you for responses :) I just wanted to double-check, I don't trust my own opinion! Of course it's the owner's business, it is simply that the owner does not live by the field and we do, hence non-horsey people saying "surely it's not nice for the horses, all that mud, never checked, etc". Obviously I know muddy horses aren't neglected horses! But having more than one person question it made me unsure of myself, so wanted to clarify. They have the hedge as shelter, so yes food/water/shelter is there.

Thank you :) I feel like a bit of a numpty really!

ETA: I guess - separate issue really - I just wonder what the situation is re: owner saying they would be removed and they weren't, and haven't seen hide nor hair of her! And pure nosiness wondering what the horses are for ;) it doesn't fit with what I know of her/her business (none of my business though :D)

Presumably, if they are given hay someone must be checking them?

Exactly - someone is taking care of them if they are feeding them, they're hardly abandoned, and despite you saying you haven't seen the owner, someone has been going up with hay.... So people saying nobody is going are wrong!!

Nearly every single one of us on here is complaining about desperately muddy fields...
