Okay, so I am 5ft 6, and around 9stone. I have quite lanky legs! Talking in terms of thoroughbreds, what sort of size would you think best for me? My boy is 15.3hh, but chunky for tb! I feel great on him but as some of you may know I am turning him away til next spring. I have been wanting a 2nd for a while and am going to view two tomorrow that my good friend who knows exactly what I like has tracked down for me. One is slightly smaller than my boy, and one bigger. I am worried I will like the 15.1hh but find myself too big.. Or look a little little on the 16.2hh. I have ridden all matter of sizes, but I guess owning one for life (hopefully) is a bit different..
Any advice would be great! Any of you up/downsized?

x

I guess! Well the little 15.1 mare I have seen just not ridden yet, and she is like your little barrell sort of tb.
The 16.2 looks more like a police horse than an ex racer. So neither of them very fine!

if its a really heavey cob u could go down to 14.2, heavy tb then 15hh and a typical lanky tb 16hh to 16.3 i think at 5,6 u would look to short on anything 17 plus and to long on anything 14.1 or below. i am 5,6 and 16stone and i rode a 14,2 and he was built like a brick sh** house and so hight wise you would be fine as i was.

i wouldnt dream of gettin on a 14,2 normally but he weighed 600kg which is massive and he wasnt even fat

I'm 5'8" and a size 10.

It really does depend on the horse. Some ride "big" for their size and others don't.

I currently ride a 14.2 Dales pony, a 15.1 Danish warmblood and a 16.2 hh Dutch warmblood x TB. My previous mare was 16.00 TBx and she felt very small compared to a 15.1 whippy little polo pony.

Just try them out and see - you can never tell how 'big' a horse will feel until you ride it. You certainly won't be too big for the 15.1 or too small for the 16.2 but may feel one is more suitable than the other.

I am only 5'3" and just over 8 stone but felt underhorsed when I rode my friends 15.1 ex racer, I was told I looked fine but just didn't feel comfortable. My own horse is fairly lightweight wbxtb and is about 16hh.

Thanks everybody. I suppose deep down I know I can only wait and see how they ride, I am just getting really swept away with excitement probably! Have found it really interesting since I joined the forum the variety of breeds and sizes you all ride and this has opened my mind up a bit more.. not enough to stray from ex racers though :)
I will let you all know how I get on tomorrow and post pics if poss.
