Ok i am 5ft2 and about 11 1/2 stone with a 14.1 (and a half just to be awkward) mare.....

Someone had the nerve today, when i mentioned i had a horse at work, to ask how big, when i said, she said "oh well not a proper horse then..." ! WHAT!??

I replied, "no she's plastic!" and was met with a dead pan expression....

She is in a cob/full bridle and is built like a horse and is in a 17inch saddle and 6ft rugs, but yes, at her height is technically a pony....

I had the above rant at the yard tonight and was met with a few comments of, well she is ONLY a pony, she's not a real horse is she!

Anyone else experienced this? or am i being stupid.

lol, why say you have a horse though, when you dont, you have a pony? Nothing wrong with having a pony and being an adult! Next they say she isnt a proper horse just agree and tell them, no but she's a damn fine pony:p

I am 5ft9 and my boy is 15 hands. So he is a horse (just!) but when I bought him as a youngster he was 14.2 hands so I still think of him as a pony! :) Ponies are just as good as horses and IMO they are actually better in so many ways - they can turn their hooves to anything! I used to ride a 12.3 hands Exmoor pony regularly a couple of years ago and I've got many memories of all of the fun rides we had together! :D

Yes, I also am "an adult with a pony" :) I get the same thing. Did you know trailblazers SJ won't let an adult compete a pony!! They say the senior classes are set for horses and ponies aren't allowed :( They say for HEALTH AND SAFETY REASONS!!

It was just a conversation, whilst sat in a team meeting, waiting for bosses to come in, not sure how it started but i heard a few girls discussing horses and riding, and as i'm fairly new, i kinda went in with "Oh i have a horse, where do you keep yours?"

It really didnt occur to me i'd said horse not pony, it just came out in an attempt to join in....failed dismally! lol

Oh well! My little mare is lovely and i wouldnt swap her for anything :D

Add me to the list - I'm also an adult with a 14/14.1hh pony! Who cares what they think, as long as you are happy with you mare, that's all that matters.

I've just bought my mare and I am currently keeping her at the yard where she was bought as I am in a waiting list to get back to my old yard. Haven't been there for about 5 years and when I was there I had a warmblood x 16.2 chestnut gelding, so I'm sure to hear some snidey comments about my new pony but I couldn't care less. Their opinions don't matter - it's my decision.

So ignore all those silly people. Ponies are so much fun - forget and enjoy her ;)

NeverSayNever - The pony in your display picture and sig is lovely - I am completely biased though as she looks exactly like my new mare :)

Yep me too, a 14h NF. I have had all manner of comments and been ignored in group lessons even when my boy is doing the best shoulder-in. I always describe him as a pony now though. More annoying is when my 15h boy is called a pony!! There is nothing pony like about him, he very much looks like a small horse. I just smile sweetly now, if they need to say it, let em get on with it. ;)

I am new on here but just want to tell everyone that I am a five foot adult and own a 13.3 Welsh Cob and I wouldn' t want anything taller. I can get on and off him to open gates out hunting when hardly anyone else can. Not only that, a few years ago when I was a bit younger ( ha ha) everyone assumed I was a teenager cos I was on a pony. That hasnt happened for a while, tho.!!:D

Im 24 and when i moved to new yard people assumed i was much younger....

i have one of each a 14,2 dales pony and a 16hh ISH

they are both brillient in their diffrent ways and for diffrent things i love them both
(although bronte the dales is my fav i got her when i was 15 and grew up with her i love her to bits)

soooo i suppose i should be counted in the adults with pony club tee hee

We have everything form tinies to huge i call them all horses no particular reason, i dont really care if i ride one of my dads 17.2 pointers or one of the natives.
Its funny though some people do have a thing about size type etc,it does crack me up when you go to some of the xc and the teenies are flying round and then you see some huge horse having a paddy at the smaller fences.

In my opinion real horse people wouldnt look down on a horse or pony;) as long as it was comfortable with rider and suitable for the job in hand horses for courses as they say.
I think they show themselves up by even making a comment like that, but just one thing stop saying you have a horse you PONY rider, did i mention we have a couple of huge 17.2 horses they are definatley horses not ponies jsut making that clear.

ahahahahahhh :D Too many 'up themselves' people with horses these days.. now in my day a coloured was looked down on!!!;);)

Yep another adult with a native pony here too, i wouldn't out of choice buy a horse, i don't have the need to, plus you can't beat a good native!

What always makes me laugh is when people with horses refer to them as ponies... hmmmmm

I will undoubtedly be shot down in flames, BUT I'm a FAT adult with a pony :D Shes supposed to be 14.2hh, and probably is, wither measurement wise, but actual size wise shes 14.1hh on her tippy toes. Shes 3/4s arab and tough as old boots! BUT I am 5ft5 and a half and 12 and a half stone on a good day!

When I agreed to buy her I was a good 14stone 10lbs. I lost 2 stone + in order to be able to be able to ride her. Due to unforeseen circumstances, shes not currently in work, BUT I will be more than happy to ride her at my current weight for very light work. In an ideal world I'll be 12stone when we are out competing. At that weight I'll be a curvy size 14, def not a skinny minny! I'll still have my chubby bits on view for everyone to slag off and I dont care! My mare is very happy and shes more than capable of lugging my fat ass about! :D

another adult with a pony here :D he is fab and the most fun to ride :D people expect him to be a plod but are quite supprised at how responsive he is :D why would you not want a pony??? I think they were just jealous because they have serious horses not fun ponies :p ;) :D

A horse is a horse is a horse, head, four legs, two eyes, mane, tail etc doesn't matter what size they are, anyone who says otherwise needs a slap as they are usually jumped up idiots that can't ride a rocking horse or people with talentless dobbins and carry on like they are a Whittaker and their horse is Milton!! all in all take no notice.

Another adult here with a very small horse at 14.3hh and a bit! (15hh on her tallest high heels!! lol)
I adore her and can't imagin having anything taller. I have evented her and oh yep, I got looked down on MANY times. ''You can't ride a pony look!'' I soon showed them that we are as good as team as they dream to be. hehe.
The saying good things come in small packages is right, don't dis the ponies!

I also have a rising yearling NF filly, to make 13.2hh. I know she won't stay with me forever, but she is here for now and I love her to pieces too, whatever size she may or may not stretch too.
I am not a small adult either, 5'4'' and over 10.5st.

Ponies rule!

I too am an adult pony owner. I too was mistaken for a child when I had a 14.1 on loan in my early twenties. I used this to my advantage and paid the child's entry fee on fun rides!

Lol thats my plan for the youngster Ive got! as long as I dye my grey hair I can still pass for oooooo 12? ;)

Had biggies at 16.hh and 18.hh and they did the job they were bred to do..
but really annoy people when I tell them not only do i have ponies but I have a mini shetland!:D

I'm afraid we will need pictures of the pony being squished by the OP. mainly because I am nosy and trying to work out how a 14.1 wears a 17 inch saddle and full size bridle. ;)

Ponies are the best. Simples.

14.1 (and three quarters) Highland owner here and *think* newfie is about 13hh?
Must admit always class them as horses but they are great fun and a horse wouldn't fit half the places I take my long-suffering pony.

Wouldn't change them for the world!!

Pedants;)

A horse is a horse is a horse, head, four legs, two eyes, mane, tail etc doesn't matter what size they are,.

Absolutely. :D

An insignificant detail. What's a few inches between friends?

I am 5'2" on a good day in work boots and on tiptoes, I weigh (also on a good day and soaking wet) 115 lbs - God knows what that is in stones, I have no idea. My riding horse is a 14h stick insect.
She is an arab which (being pedantic myself here) whatever height they end up as are still classed as horses. I have a 32" horse too.

I always call my boy a pony because that's what he is. Except in more formal situations - I had telephone interview last year with a horsey company and it came up that I had a pony. I mentioned him and referred to him as a pony, when the interviewer asked what type he was (horsey lady) and I said 13.2hh Fell pony she said "oh so he is actually a pony, I didn't know if you were one of those people who refer to your 16.2hh hunter as your pony!" When I hear myself say pony I do think it makes me sound like a spoilt 10 year old child so I do say "horse" in more formal situations!!! :D :D

I have a 14.2 pony and at 56 I AM TECHNICALLY AN ADULT, guess what, I don't give a flying *******, seems to me a lot of people with horses are either too afraid to ride them very far, and as well lets face it, the world is flat and you fall off the world into horse floaty space and die, or the damn things are lame every 5 minutes, ponies, Luuuuuuurve them.

I'm 30, 5.2ft and 10 stone and until last year had two 13.2hh ponies for the last 18 years. Now i have a 13.2 welsh and 17 ISH. My fondest memories are on the ponies as i'm yet to get the big dude out doing things but I refer to them as the "boys" or the "horses". Screw what anyone thinks, i'll ride my pony and love every minute of it. The only thing i have found it the big guy gets more respect from drivers, he looks like a police horse and definately gets more space etc.

Here they are: little and large on their first day out together.
