Size of actual ring on loose ring snaffles....does anyone know......

...if the size of the ring itself on a loose ring snaffle effects it's action?

Got a new loose ring for Blue today, only one they had with the correct size and type of mouth piece i wanted had particularly small rings on it. Didn't think much of it tbh but someone on yard mentioned today that a smaller ring would have an impact, although helpfully she couldn't tell me what!! Trainer wasn't there to check with so i'm wondering if anyone can shed any light???

He went the same in it as he did in the normal sized ring one i''ve been borrowing so not worried really, more out of interest.

If my memory is correct normal loose rings are 70mm. The smaller ones are 55mm and they are bradoons (as in to be used with a double bridle). The only impact it might have is if your Horse opens his mouth there's more chance of the ring being pulled through. You might have seen racehorses with particularly large rings for the same reason (ie to avoid this). No reason why you can't use a bradoon as a snaffle. I have seen people using them like this.

Ah i didn't even think about Bradoons....of course!!! HAving said that it doesnt seem that small although i didnt measure it, must be. Still if it does the job

The larger ones lie more against the side of the face so have a stabilising effect and can help with turning - like a full cheek snaffle to a certain effect. It's all just mechanics!
