I am looking to buy a new bit for competing in but as i have only used a full cheek but on my lad i am not sure what to get.

Does the size of the eggbutt rings effect the use and application of the bit?

I ask as for some reason i really dont like big rings on bits and have seen a bradoon which has the smaller ring size but not sure if this will effect the use.

This is what i have seen - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260791953603&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT#ht_1955wt_1139

Also is it okay to use it on its own - ie not as part of a double bridle?

A bradoon will normally be thinner than a normal bit, as it's designed to be fitted in with the other bit, so you may find it's a little harsher on his mouth, but only by a tiny fraction. I wouldn't have thought it would have mattered.

The bit ring sizes can influence the pressure from the opposite ring when turning etc. If your lad is used to a full cheek then he might not 'get' the smaller rings at first. It is also easier for a bit to slide through the mouth with smaller rings, so if your horse tends to evade then this might be an issue. A thinner mouthpiece wouldn't bother me, as many horses find less is more providing that there are sensitive hands on the other end of the reins. :)
