Just a quick question.
What size of horse do all you Ifor Williams 505 owners have.
I know it says it takes 2 horses 16.2 but just curious to know if anyone fits their larger horses into one?

To be honest, it is more to do with weight than height, as the 510 is only about 10cm taller (I think, don't shoot me if I am wrong). The weight that a 505 can legally carry is about that of two 16.2hh horses. I put a 17hh in a 505 on his own, and he travelled fine in it. However, I wasn't comfortable travelling my 16hh alongside my OH's 15.2hh hunter - she is a Suffolk Punch x and probably weighs best part of 750kg!! With my 16-hander that would have put them over the weight limit that the trailer can cope with!

I have a 16.3, he would be travelling by himself mostly, if not the only other in it would be my 13.2 pony.
Moonwalker, did your horse travel ok in it or was he quite squashed in?
I was concerned about the length of them too, the 510 does seem a lot longer (correct me if im wrong)
Just finding it hard to get a 510 and wondered if i could get away with a 505.
He is a very good traveller, just dont want to put him in a position where he has no room this puts him off travelling

We got a 505 for exactly the same reason, although we do have a big lorry as well for taking the big ones out. Saying that, they go in the trailer if it is local!

Length wise, our 17hh is a long horse, and he went in it no problems, not too squashed up. We have also taken out the partitions and travelled one in there cross tied, with a single breast bar (made by my lovely dad) and this meant that he could stand on a slight slant.

When you stand in a 505 and then in a 510 it does give you the impression of being a lot roomier (but then I suppose that is because it is!)
I travelled my 16.3 IDxTB in a 505 once and he was a bit squashed to be honest. It just was a bit tight with the head clearance, width and length. But then he is long with a high head carriage. I now have a 510 and there is loads of room in it.

Im surprised your finding it hard to get a 510, there are always some on Horsemart.

My 17 hander travels fine in it, I have taken the partition out though and put full width breast and bum bars in and he's fine, he travels really well, you dont know he's there!

Im in scotland and one of my friends tried for ages to get a 510 and eventually had to travel 3hours for one.
Im not sure what budget you have but we were at Scone horse trials last month and the Ifor williams dealer there was doing a fantastic deal on the new style ifor williams trailers.i think a 510 was £3800 inc vat.
They are lovely too.
Id be tempted to wait for a 510 as if your horse gets sqished in it he may become reluctant to travel in it.We had a 1.6 with a high head carrige that used to come out of a 505with cuts on his face etc (owner was a bit of a div). he begun to be a pain to load but goes fine in the lorry....

I have a 16.3 and he travelled fine in a 505 for 3 year BUT...
1. he a a narrow, short backed TB
2. he is a very sweet traveller (no head throwing)
3. he is of light frame and does not weigh much

I would be wary of putting anything else in that was over 16.2 because of the headroom/comfort of the horse.

My 16.3hh just squidges in a 505 with the partition but the neck length and width are tight - much better without a partition. My 17hh hangs out the back of the 505 with the partition in but will travel on an angle without the partition.

My 16.1hh was too big and I definately put him off trailers, hes a broad horse and although short coupled in a 6' 6 to 6' 9 rug??? He was too long and I wouldnt have tried to fit him in with the centre partition as I honestly dont think he would have. Saying that my friend travels her 16.3 with no problems.

I travelled my 17h lad in my 505. He takes 7' rugs and is rather a large horse.

He did fit and travelled for several months with the partition in. It was tight for him - the 510 is much better for him. My 15.3 is lost in the 510 though

He takes a 6'6" rug, he isnt that chunky a horse though, think I might try to borrow a 505 to see what he is like in it before I make any decisions.
Would always use a poll guard though if the height seemed an issue. He is a good traveller though - doesnt toss his head about etc.
