Size of pony?

I am currently looking to buy a companion for my horse and something safe enough to teach my 6 year old brother and his 7 year old friend to ride on. I was originally thinking of buying a Shetland standing between 10hh - 10.2hh but when I mentioned this to a friend at the yard, she suggested that I look for something bigger, perhaps a Welsh Section A standing between 11h - 11.2hh. My brother is around 3ft9ins / 115cms and his friend is a little closer to 4ft. They both weigh between 3/4 stone. Any ideas from anybody?!

Well, although Shetlands are small, they can carry quite heavy. A welsh pony would be a good option, they are quite sweet and i have known some good first ridden.

I would worry about anything to small that cant carry weight becuase i would want to be able to get on and school... or know a capable rider could... good small ponies are like gold dust....
 
If you intend on keeping it for a while, i'd go for something more 12.2 - 13hh. These kids will soon shoot up and outgrow anything to tiny.
 
I am currently going through the same thing, except I have a 6 yr old and a 2 yr old.
I have looked at sec A's, but the problem there is they can be very wide, and dependant on their breeding / handling, quite skittish. Fabulously intelligent, and lovely looking, but I'd go for a x breed sec a if I were to go down that route.
I am off to look at a shettie this w'end. height wise, if a shettie is a 'proper' shettie, they can easily carry a small teen, so unless you have a long legged child it should last until they are about 10.
 
I've got an 11.1 Welsh A for my 6 year old, he has had him for 4 years now. Hes very wide and stocky - pone, not boy!
The pony I have had tabs on for a while is now coming up for sale in the summer, so I will buy her for next, shes 13.1 and I am worried its a big jump, but Welshy is wide and sharp and bigger pone is narow and calm!
Actually came on to say that I think 6 yuear old - whos average/tall for his age, should fit 11.1 for another 2 years I think.
 
Shetlands if you get a proper full out one are know to be extremly good weight carriers and carry adults (have seen this happen wouldn't try it)but i was asked to school a naughty shetland 10.2 for a young girl and being bout 7 stone he didn't seem to struggle at all and went like a dream had a couple of rears as thats what he was doing with the little ones so when he knew it wasn't working he went lovely sorry to anyone who thinks i am cruel riding a little shettie but people underestimate them! if you can find a pony with the right temperment and one you can trust it doesn't really matter what kinda breed it is as long as you are happy putting kids on it.gud luckxxx
