has anyone else had any issues with the sizing of these boots?

My horse currently has a size 3 but he's not worn them since feb and they no longer fit! so in my wisdom, I assumed he'd need to go up to a size 4

but before spending my money I measured his hooves! they are coming up as 15cm wide and long! so I checked the box and that would fit into a size 6!! surely he can't have gone up 3 sizes in a few months!

so I bought some size 6's, looked at them, they looked like they'd be far too big, but surely they must fit! tried them on tonight and it looked like a child wearing her mothers shoes. gappy everywhere.

So, I've taken them back and measured the 4 and 5's and taken a chance on a 5 but looking at them, they are still huge, i'm worried they will still be too big, but based on putting a tape measure inside, they should fit!

If these are too big, i'll take them back and get the 4s. Shame you can't take the horse to the shop to try them on hehe

I've just bought some - they looked massive but actually fit perfectly.

When was your horse last trimmed? You are meant to measure just after a fresh trim.

He's self trimming, so hasn't had this feet done since Sept! will see how I get on with the size 5's tomorrow!

when I measured him before, the boots seemed to fit fine, just don't see why they are so different now! I could literally get 2 fingers in the back of the size 6 boot

I have a dinky little pair for my welsh D which arrived exactly as measured. I thought the sizes went up in 15mm increments, therefore going up 3 sizes would be nearly 5cm extra? Are you sure?!

If you find a measuring guide online, the measurements are demonstrated from a straight line across the heel.....I wonder if this might be where you've gone wrong?

I'm using the guide on the box but clearly something isn't right

Before he was the top end of 3s to be fair he could have got away with a 4 but the 6 was far too big, so hopefully he's going to fit better in the 5s. Might I do think I might have to get 4s.

I wonder if I actually measured too far from his toe to his heel as they do say on the box that you can go one size wider than the length

Some horses do measure up weird! Generally though, you don't necessarily measure to the back of the frog. Draw a line linking the heels and measure from the line to the toe. Cavallos do come up big, so if you're right between sizes, plump for the smaller size! Hoof boutique do a hire service if you want to save yourself the hassle of buying and sending back.

I think it depends on the size of your horses legs/fetlocks too. I have a TB with typical flattish feet. Measured the soles, got the exact size, and though the sole fits the bottom of the boot exactly, the top part is way too big. A smaller size and his foot would be too big. I solve the problem by bandaging around the pastern before I put them on.

Oh good thanks for your replies

So I tried the size 5 this morning and like you Stormox, they fitted perfectly on the hooves, but were still to big around the top, even when I pulled them to the tightest they'd go to!

I remember watching a video when I first got his sizes 3 and they made the boots look fairly easy to get on, but maybe not quite as easy as the 5 were, but not as difficult as I've always found the 3s!! I think he is probably a 4.5.

I'm not sure if I should take them back and try the 4s (luckily the shops only 10 mins away) or whether I should try also bandaging?

When you say they are too big around the top, do you mean around the pastern? If so, it won't fit super tight all the way around the pastern - you will need room for the pastern to move back and forward for when the horse is moving ;) If it is looking particularly gappy, you can get gaiters, to help with this. They look like they are going to move like wellies - but if the sole size is correct, then they should be good.

I have Cavallos on my mare and dad has them on his driving pony - both with the same space around the pastern. But both are good when in use and don't move.

:)

ah cool thanks for your advice

yes around the pastern! his old boots weren't tight but they certainly looked better than these boots!! I can get a finger in all the way around!! I only tried them quickly this morning, so will give him a walk around in them this evening and check them over again!!

I will have a look at gaiters :)

I think that they're supposed to be fairly loose around the collar. These are size 2s on my youngster, they're quite big so I've added the Cavello gel insert to bulk it out. The 1s were too small. She loves them, and they have never rubbed her.

Arhh awesome, was hoping someone might have some pics!!! Mine are probably not too dis-similar to yours, so maybe I just need to get some inserts too then!! was worried if they were that loose, they might fall off as he was walking :)
