As some of you may know I took my Mum away for her 50th birthday and paid for her to have a SJ lesson with Brian Huton at Talland School of Equitation. My mum used to jump and point-to-pointed when she was younger but had a bad fall about 5 years ago and it completely shattered her confidence.

Anyway I had managed to keep the lesson a secret until we were sitting in the hotel room on Saturday lunchtime - her face was a picture when I told her - a mixture of wanting to smile, kill me and throw up!

So off we went to Talland. It has recently moved to its new location so has a huge indoor and outdoor school and a big barn full of stables. Mum was riding a 16.1hh 18yr old IDxTB called Woody - he was an ex-team chaser and hunter.

Brian was wonderuful - chatted to Mum to find out what her aim was for the lesson, spent time on her position to start with and just kept talking to her the whole time to help her relax. About halfway through the lesson Mum started to smile which prompted Brian to tell her "to be careful otherwise she might actually enjoy herself!"

By the time the lesson finished Mum had a big grin on her face and was buzzing all the way back to the hotel. She feels so much more confident and was talking about who she could jump back home

Below are some pics and a couple of videos - please excuse the sound, it was wet and windy

I bet we crossed paths on Saturday, I think I was the dressage lesson he taught in the indoor before going outside to jump!

Oh my god I am soooooooooooo excited now!

I did feel nervous about going to Talland, but after reading how much confidence your Mum got after one lesson I really cannot wait! Brain sounds like my kind of instructor - and it sounds like your Mum had a wonderful time.

I might even ring and book another one for the end of March

That sounds a fabulous present for your Mum, now she will be full of confidence and raring to go!
I took CCj there for some lessons on their Advanced horses and was really impressed.
I always recommend the place to anyone who wants top class horses and good instruction, my family have had five of their instructors (Pammy and her instructor used to give clinics at Tall trees) and I think they cater for everyone from nervous beginners to Advanced riders.
I think some people are a bit put off because it has a good reputation, but it's a proper riding school as well as a competition training base, so everyone gets a welcome.

Bless her - I'm really pleaed she had a good time.
That Hossy looks fab too.
xx
When Fi is back to normal she can ride her anytime.
