Hello all. Still on the look out for a new horse. Seen one advertised I like that has been jumping BN and discovery.

I'm after a horse mainly for dressage and unafiliated sj-ing. What restrictions would this horse having money on its card have on me jumping unafil?

Sorry to sound dim

A lot of the local shows around me have £50 or £75 restrictions for SJ classes. I loaned a horse for a year that I did both BSJA and local on and had to be very careful as I very nearly knocked myself out of the local shows. TBH, if a horse is good enough to be jumping discovery, you may find people get a bit funny about you doing unaff, although if you only want to do unaff then you should be ok.

I agree with Murphy's last comment. It can be viewed as pot hunting, if you take a higher grade horse round lower grade courses. That said heaps of people do it.

It depends how much money the horse has on its card in terms of which unaff. classes you could enter, but if the horse is still in BN, chances are you probably wont be excluded from the likes of Trailblazers and UK Riders classes! I jumped Ellie out of BN but still competed at Trailblazers whilst we were doing Discovery and Newcomers, and nobody ever seemed to mind

I think the problems only arise when you are seen to be jumping - and more to the point, winning - at affiliated level and then the next weekend you go out and jump a 75cm unaff class

In your case, you clearly arent going to be doing that, so I wouldnt worry!

Often the UA rules state that the combination cannot have won more than x ammount so you shoould be OK. It will vary from show to show though. Don't know about trailblazers or anything though

I think it depends on the event. Round me, most unaffiliated SJ comps dont seem to say anything about BSJA winnings so technically I could enter my horse with almost £1k winnings in a 2'3 minimus class :p :p I personally dont really like pothunting so even though Im eligible for "open" unaffiliated classes, I still tend to go HC if under 1.10m as I use it as a schooling round.

If its not the same horse and rider who have the BSJA wins then I dont see a problem. I dont then see it as pot hunting at all.

If I were you, Id probably have a look at some schedules from your usual centre's and see what their rules are - if they all have BSJA limits on their classes then you may have problems.

So if I got on one of John Whittakers horses and rode it round my local 2'6 class - you wouldn't see that as pot hunting?

I would be seeing you in a lovely shade of green for being lucky enough to ride one of his horses in the first place! :p

If you yourself were a rider who were capable of jumping the kind of tracks that the horse has been jumping....then yes, that would be pothunting. But if John Whitaker deigned fit to give one of his top horses to a nervous, inexperienced and shaky rider for whom 2'6 is the absolute limit...then no, how could that be pothunting? Chances are, a horse who's been jumping 1.50 Grands Prix would probably get eliminated in a 2'6 anyway - s/he wouldnt be arsed with jumping it

It's a bit like in eventing - wasnt there a top horse last year who was 'given back' to its novice owner to compete in the lower echelons? Was it Balincoola? I know a lot of people said at the time that it would be pot hunting, but in my eyes, it isnt. Competition is - most of the time - about a partnership

The only problem you will have OP is if you want to do RC team stuff - I am pretty sure that to jump RC Novice SJ teams you can't have any money at all BSJA on the horse's card? But TBH if he has been doing Disco then you'd be fine doing the Intermediate teams and I believe you are the allowed some money. But with BRC I'm sure it is horse rather than combination.
