Okay new horsey has very flakey skin.
He was quite scabby when he arrived. Big chunks of skin flaking off out of his mane. Hes not overly itchy though. I give him a good groom everyday and if the weather was warmer then he could have a bath.
Is there anything I can do for him topically? I don't want to start feeding him if I really don't need to.

Also another thing (maybe related) but he had what looked like a bite on his flank. When I was changing his rug yesterday, I noticed the lump had got bigger, it and the surrounding area was hot to touch and whatever fluid was there was tracking downwards.
Thought I would leave his rugs off and get the air to it, and when I got home I had a closer look. No pus or anything like that, so I cleaned it and applied purple spray.
Any idea what this could be? I am worried that whatever it is, is tracking downwards. Could this signal an infection?

Thanks in advance!

Does sound as if he's received a bite on the bum.

As for flaky skin - yep a good bath in head and shoulders will help, as will getting the rug off generally so that he can roll and get some air on the skin.

The best thing though is some corn oil in his feed. Why not just give him a little one with a bit of sugar beet and chaff?

Thanks AmyMay.....roll on the good weather eh?
