hi,

my horse is grey and has always had bad skin.
Last month he got mud fever on all 4 legs and was prescribed antibiotics and i was told to wash with hubiscrub, keep dry and not to scrub too much which i have followed although its not changed.

However he now has it all over his neck and shoulders, could it be sweat or rain scald? How would i treat this?

Vet is out again next week, should i ask for skin scrapings?

How old is your horse hun? If he's a veteran, be aware that one of the many symptoms of Cushings is skin conditions that won't heal. I'm on a mission about this having just had my veteran diagnosed with Cushings that I've missed for at least 2 years because he wasn't showing the symptom that everyone knows about which is a long curly coat.

Thankyou everyone,
he is 13 years old, not that old ?

I will try for some photos tonight!
I am planning to speak to a second vet today for a second opinion so fingers crossed we get some answers!

What are the lesions like?

Like box of frogs, I've had a rough time with my little pony - she has pemphigus (autoimmune) which is a rare condition but presents like mud fever aNd rainscald and is grossly under diagnosed.

Other way I would probably get some betnovate cream and stop washing with hibiscrub. Hibi kills good and bad cells so slows healing.

Sounds like rainscald to me. I had a pony that was prone to rainscald and mud fever and it occurs when the weather is either warm and wet, or just wet. Is it in an area where his rug covers? If it has the chance to get wet I would guess rainscald but if it is under his cover, and his cover is clean and water proof might be something else.
