My 2 year old gelding has bumps on his shoulder, girth and side. It is worse on his left side than the right. There is nothing on his bum, back or neck. They seem to irritate and itch him too :(

I have had the vet look at him and I am to wash him with a shampoo called Malaseb and see if it clears up over time and if not then take some blood tests.

He is partbred arab and he has thin skin, his mum is prone to heat bumps. I have cut the horsehage out of his diet and I have reduced the amount of rugs I put on him (he has a full coat and I was foolishly trying to be a good mummy by rugging him up)

The bumps are on average the size of 5p pieces to the larger ones that are like 10p's if that makes any sense. Most of them have a scab formed on top, I have picked a few and they have a yellow top on them but they don't burst.

Has anyone else dealt with this and if so did it clear up and what was it that caused it?

He is supposed to be going showing this year and when he loses his winter coat he will look terrible with all these lumps on him, poor thing! :(

My horse had this. Started around the base of his neck, then his shoulder, and slowly crept back, covering his saddle and girth area. Spoke to the vet who said lots of cases coming up. Nothing changed. Same food, rugs, tack, washing powder, bedding etc etc. He was perfectly alright in himself, just horrible lumps, and they left the skin quite scurfy. Vet said various approaches depending on the owner, from doing nothing, to antihistamines etc etc. I chose the do nothing route, but did give him a really good wash but only in a normal shampoo. It has just about disappeared after 4 weeks.

Thanks irish only, I have a feeling the haylage may have been too heating for him and hes been off it for a week now, I am going to wash him with the shampoo and just hope it clears up :)

Thanks

My horse had the same thing too. All I did was wash the area with antibacterial wash and it cleared up after a week or two. I still don't know what caused it but I didn't change my routine after that just carried on as normal and have not had any more lumps or bumps since.
Hope it clears soon.

Thank god its not just me! I turned my new boy out in a new rug on saturday with no neck cover, changed his rug in the night to his normal one, sunday morning he was covered in these lumps and sores, again did the same thing turned him out in a half neck new rug sunday, changed it in the evening, and then checked them yesterday and on his shoulders theyve gone scabby and flakey, he's got a few lumps under his belly and around his poly pad area, however there is one lump under his belly that is an open sore, so have cleaned it and put some sudocrem over it. Any other suggestions as to what todo would be great, could it be the new rug? Nothing else has changed. Hes a fine skinned warmblood.

Weather has changed a lot, it would be my bet that most of them are too hot in rugs now and to ask them to wear neck covers in this weather is plain overkill. They're meant to be horses not delicate flowers.

hes in a 200gram with neck cover in the night as its still cold, then in the day a 200gram without a neck cover, i dont think that is 'overkill' we've only had 2 warm days, he's fully clipped.

I have washed him twice with the shampoo and they are not so hot and seem to have gone down in size a little but they are still there, I am guessing they will be for at least another month.

Just spoken to my vet, he advised to wash with malaseb everyday and use imaverol every other day. I hope it goes soon as im taking him to stockland lovell monday

My mare came in with these the other day - she is fully clipped and was out in a no fill rain sheet. I couldn't put it down to anything other than perhaps she was too warm as other than the weather nothing has changed at all for her. She is now out with nothing and they have totally disappeared! I was also trying to be a kind mummy as she is fully clipped but it seems I wasn't doing her any favours at all! She is happy as larry and not bumpy or itchy now, slapped wrist for me for trying to wrap her up!
