Ive got the vet coming out to look at my itchy boy, we thought he had sweet itch, but now it looks like it may be dermatitis type infection after having him fully clipped out.

They have said they will probably take skin scrapes & or blood tests, does anyone have a rough idea how much these kind of tests cost? and how long it takes for the results i should have asked at the time of making the appointment but forgot :(

Also anyone else here had experience of itchy pony's with skin infections, how did it work out etc.,

My old mare started itching in the winter 3 years ago, with tufts of hair coming out like mudfever scabs. We tried everything foodwise and new/old rugs etc. She had steroid pills that didn't help either. It was all over her body so even though whe is retired we clipped her out so we could wash her iin maleseb easier. Being naked made a difference. She had skin scrapes and tufts tested which came back showing nothing. It goes on all winter and then stops in the spring so I think its something to do with rugging/greasy coat. Luckily she doesn't scratch with a rug on, just goes mental if you take it off.
The only thing I did find helped was Feedmarks Derma something, but it may have been co incidence that the spring was on the way.
As for blood tests she had a haematology/liver package test and it was £59, which doesn't include taking the blood which is an extra £14.50!!!??

Hope you find out whats causing it, don't think I will ever get to the bottom of whats causing hers.

dotty1 - thanks for your reply, im so sorry you haven't got to the bottom of whats wrong with your mare - is her condition manageable though?

At the moment she is fine until you take her rug off and then she scratches herself like fury. She is completely retired and lives out rugged. So far this year she only has small scabby patches

Here is a pic of a scabby bit on her back from last year

My boys' looks like mud fever! but its on his rump, chin and above his stifle, theres a few other little patches come up here and there.

He rubs so much i daren't leave him in his stable overnight, i have to tie him up when he comes in for a feed and he's rubbed so much the stable wall (breeze blocks) has been damaged and is having to be rebuilt! He can't rub in the field as its electric fencing and no trees!! so better off out
