I think I am going to book my dog and cat in for skin scrapes, just wondering if anybody knows how much they are roughly these days/ I realise that costs will vary from area to area and vet to vet, but would appreciate some for warning of the rough costs.

Thanks:D

Skin scrapes only show specific things? I'd follow vets advice as if the signs point towards something that wont show up on skin scrapes you may need some cheaper/more expensive done in order to diagnose the condition.

Skin scrapes are around £25/30 with my vet (based in South West Scotland) checking for the mites that cause demodetic mange/demodex.

I'm sure you know this already but unless you've been advised by your vet to have one or both of the animals done, I don't think they'll do them just because you ask.

Yes, I realise it has to be something the vet advises, and has an idea of something to look for, but I suspect mange of some type. Need to visit the vet to discuss the problem and options.

Thanks though, £25/£30 is less than I expected (plus the visiting fee of course)

It would be interesting to know why you wanted to get the tests done.

At the moment its eczema (atopic dermatitis) season for many dogs so if your worried about a dog scratching around the face ears etc then atopic dermatitis is often the culprit, ie an allergy to pollen in the spring, often dust mites at other times of the year etc.

A bit I did on the subject from a layman’s perspective some time back.

It usually works out about £140 total whenever I have to get the scrapings - £25/30 for the scrape, £30 for the vet and another £30 ish for medicine. Then she usually gets her bloods done if it comes back with mites (about £50), I don't think it's standard to do blood panels with a skin scrape though, my daft dog just has a multitude of illnesses that tend to flare up at the same time.
