Skin So Soft - Avon

I have the oil version too. I use it as fly repellent and to clean my clipping blades - makes the horse smell lovely and works well on the blades.
 
I mix the Fresh bath oil (blue/green bottle) with one third each of water, white vinegar and SSS and use in spray bottle or apply with sponge. Seems to keep the flies away, smells nice, not too greasy and a lot cheaper that bought fly repellants. Some people use the SSS spray oil but I've not tried that. Just waiting for my order from Avon to get cracking.
 
Sorry Hollysmum didn't answer your question regarding sweetitch. Our pony suffers from it and the SSS did help to repel the midgies but like most products it has to be re-applied regularly ie morning and night. I tried Itchnomore from Equine America last year in her mane when it got bad and it did help but smells like creosote and looks like it would stain whites/greys. I know I'm wandering off the SSS subject but I'm also trying the 'Sweet Relief' powder, which people have recommended on other sweet itch posts. Ordered it on Sunday afternoon, (not expensive under £8 incl postage) delivered Tuesday and pony ate it in feed last night so we'll see if there is an improvement in the next few weeks. Obviously I can't yet comment on the effectiveness of it yet but very prompt service from the seller.

Hiya sorry being abit thick, fround the bath oil, but what is the SSS bit you mention ?
 
SSS - Skin So Soft.

I've used the spray oil on myself and found it kept the midges away whilst rowing in the summer. Think it may be a bit too oily for equine use though. Just treat yourself with it instead!!;)
 
I use the dry oil body spray on the nag for repelling flies. Seems to work, I've observed them hovering about 2" from her body and not landing.

ETS that it goes solid at slightly colder temperatures so I keep it in the car rather than at the yard and carry it up every morning. Otherwise I have to hold it in my hands for 10 minutes and keep shaking it!
 
I've used it in the recipes below for fly repellant, I've also used the lotion and dry oil spray on myself with good results the midges think I'm a walking banquet !


Recipe 1 - Horses with sensitive skin (citronella free):

You will need:

• 1 Cup- Water
• 1 Cup- Skin So Soft Bath Oil (Woodland Fresh, Avon Product)
• 2 Cups-Vinegar
• 1 Table Spoon- Eucalyptus Oil (found in health food stores / chemists)

Shake spray bottle well before spraying on horse.


Recipe 2 – Original Formula Makes Up to 4 litres of fly spray

You will need:

• 4 Tea Bags
• 30ml Pure Citronella (Chemist bought) - NB: NOT Citronella Oil (used for candles only!!!)
• 25ml Tea Tree Oil (Chemist bought)
• Malt Vinegar (half a mug)
• Boiling Water (1 litre of water)
• A container or spray bottle

Fill and boil kettle and pour approx 1 litre of water in with 4 tea bags into suitable container and leave to cool.
Once cooled remove tea bags and add half a mug of malt vinegar,
Then mix and add 25ml of T Tree oil,
Mix again and add 30ml of Citronella,
Mix and dilute to make approximately 4 Litres of fly spray

Pour fly spray into suitable container (liquid tight) - that you can either spray or apply with sponge if your horse doesn’t like sprays.

Avon’s ‘Skin-So-Soft’ bath oil product is sworn by as a fly deterrent. The above recipes can also be used on humans.

I would just like to add though - I did a bit of research on Catnip Oil - bit of a bugger to get hold of but it is supposedly THE best thing as a fly repellant. It is something like 30% better than DEET!

Perhaps if we added that to the before-mentioned receipes we might have a winning formula!!
 
I am getting confused (will add it does not take a lot for that to happen!!! :D)

What product do you guys use, the SSS bath oil, dry body oil or one of the others?!!

Do any of you know of something that works against horse flies, we are plagued be them in the summer months!
