Skinned leg update

Georgie skinned the inside of his front leg on Saturday, as per my previous post. He hasnt been lame at all. Was a little stiff last night. Tonight however though, he has heat and swelling around his knee and on the inside of his leg just below the knee. Still not lame but a little stiff. He is in 24/7 at the moment (waterlogged paddocks). He is having a bute a day and I am walking him in hand for 1/2 hour to 3/4 hour daily. Should I carry on riding him as he is not lame to help with the swelling or not? Is there anything else I should be doing? Not doing?

If he's not lame, then yes I'd be inclined to walk him at least to help with the swelling. Is it your choice he's not out?? Because I would chuck him out preferably. Keep the skinned area nice and moist with something as simple as sudocreme - and keep an eye out for any building infection.
 
Thanks Amymay. He is in because he gets mudfever, but I have been toying with chucking him out for a few hours to see if it helps with the swelling. Just have to deal with the mud fever after I suppose. I'm still using Aloe Vera gel, it had sort of scabbed over but this has started to peel.
 
I personally feel that the mud feaver is less of an issue that the swelling could be.

There are plenty of good ways to protect the legs, thereby reducing the risk of mud feaver.

I've never used the allow gel, but as long as it does the trick great. Did you post pictures in the previous post??
 
See now I'd think that the aloe gel may be getting it to heal without you getting all the gunk out first? Maybe try a hot and wet poultice first - see if you can draw anything - then a dry one.

With Byters, as it was summer, after we'd poulticed it to make sure there was nothing infected, we struggled to keep the flies off and it got infected again a bit - hence the honey dressings and keeping it covered. It "disinfected" as it healed as honey is brillant for being sterile!
 
I didnt post pictures - but this is it on the day after he did it. The skin was unbroken apart from a little graze near the bottom.

I have turned him out now so hopefully will see an improvement in the swelling tonight. Currently I am just applying loads of aloe vera and leaving it uncovered. Should I try bandaging? Trouble is it is very high up n the inside of his foreleg, not the easiest place to bandage.
 
my mare has done this several times and i find ridding her even if she is lame just takes the swelling down but i wouldnt do much more than a few short trots until he seems to ease off again! Hope this helps but keep up with the bute as it will keep the lameness if any away x
 
Oooo nice scrape!!!!

Don't bandage, continue with Alo, turn out.

Wouldn't give me any cause for concern at all.

Horse will make full recovery
