My friend has just rescued a border collie and he's a little bit on the slim side! Can anyone recommend a decent food that will build him up. He's 12 months old and healthy apart from the lack of weight!

Thanks

I acquired a skinny dog various breeders advised me to put it on Puppy food ie the dried variety - Royal Canin is good and when you get the weight gain, slowly wean them off back to standard food. This shouldnt be long term. Puppy food is high in calories and contains vitamins oils etc.

in the past whenever I have had skinny dogs I cook a pan of pasta and mix with their normal food. I suggest this to my friend with skinny boxer who had tried for years to put the weight on and he noticed a difference within a couple of weeks.

As above Royal Canin is a high quality but cost effective food - they do a "sensible" named one in a formulation to suit the size of a Border Collie, hugher in oils than normal but easy on the digestion. Also as above cooked pasta is a good addition, plus can of sardines in oil once or twice a week.

The key to dogs gaining weight is to feed little and often in the beginning - perhaps 4 or 5 small meals during the day. Gradually increase the quantity of food and reduce number of feeds over time. One of my dogs was a nightmare to keep weight on in her younger days, she's a gannet now and maintaining weight is no longer a problem!
