Ok, my sister felt sorry for the miserable looking puppies in the pound so she took two home!! They are "apparently" Fox hound x Lab but one looks more like a Border collie x ... Anyway I am utterly shocked at the condition these poor pups were kept in and the condition they are in  One is half the size of the other (probably the runt of the litter), look full of worms, weepy eyes and they have fleas. They were covered in poo so had to be bathed earlier today. They are skin and bones and just in general miserable looking. They are apparently around 6 weeks old and were vaccinated last week (I always thought you were suppose to vaccinate at 8 weeks upwards, but I could be wrong!!?). Anyway il be bringing them to the vets tomorrow for eyes, worms and fleas but what should we feed them to beef them up? Sister got some James Wellbeloved puppy food so they had some of that and some bread/milk,. Would it also be a good idea to put them on some puppy replacement milk? There poos are rather sloppy!!

Don't give them milk (other than a dog milk replacement) as they won't be able to digest it, so sloppy **** is guaranteed.

Raw mince helped put weight on Ozzie as a pup as he was a fussy devil about eating!

Worms can give them the shits too.

Porridge, weetabix with Lactol. I would think lots of small meals - even 5 to 6 times a day. Your vet will advise. I find JW very good and I mix it with Butchers tripe.

From your description, I'd say that the most vital thing for those pups, is an effective worming! ;)

At their tender age, feed isn't actually of primary importance, but a lack of parasites, both internal and external, most certainly is. With a heavy parasite burden, feed will be of little consequence.

once they hqave seen the vet, and been wormed and flead, then little and often. boiled rice and chicken is good. small meals frequently! remember they will poo approx 10 to 15 mins after eating!! ask the vet what they would recommend feed wise.

For those who would expect a vet to also be a dietician, I'd suggest that you think again, and if you're in doubt, do just look at the massively high (and potentially dangerous) levels of protein which is within the bulk of the feeds which they promote.

Not all vets, I'll accept, but most. I sometimes wonder if they work on the basis, that they're guaranteed extended work, if they sell unsuitable foods to the unwary.

Me? A cynic? Perhaps!! ;)

Alec.

Mmm,they just happen to stock just the thing...it`s a pyramid sell thing, and the junior vets and nurses are pushed hard to flog it.

Both wormed and de-flead today, have to go back next week for there vaccinations ... Tbh it never crossed my mind to ask the vets what to feed ... I always forget to ask something  Just messaged a dog breeder I know as shes bound to have good advise!! Bought some Lactol this morning which they seemed to like, there more perkier today but not eating much tbh.

Don't buy any food from the vet or commercial dog food from the supermarket!

Lactol over decent kibble to soak it or better, raw beef and/or chicken mince. Please don't give them grains e.g. Weetabix, it can cause an allergic reaction and is pointless nutritionally for dogs.

Our vets only seemed to stock pedigree and eukanuba!! They wont eat soaked/damp kibble but will nibble at the dry stuff. I was thinking of getting some wet food to mix with the dry food until they put a bit of weight on. These are the little guys in question (black/white is male and blonde/white female), not the best pics as you cant see how skinny and beer bellied they are ...

Agree try the trays, Wainwrights, Nature Diet or something like Applaws, tins from the shops are mostly water with not much good in them.
Pets @ Home and Jollyes do the Prize Choice frozen foods, they have tripe, chicken, rabbit etc.
What's your location again, PM me. If you are where I think you are there is a super independent pet shop not too far from you.

Thanks for that link cinnamontoast! Can I ask a question please?

I have an 11 week old Cairn, her poos are quite soft and sometimes a bit mucusy and fairly light in colour? I am feeding her 100g spilt into three feeds of Hilsl Science Plan for puppies ( she came with a bag! ) she is 2kilos in weight. Had her second injection Thursday and was microchipped.

Looking at the link, I'm suprised to say the least!

I have half a bag left of the feed but would like to change it onto one of the "green light ones"

Can someone give me advice on which is best and is it normal for a poo's to be like that, our vets are not very good at nutritional advice and just like to "sell what they have"! and weren't concerened about her poos either. She was wormed three weeks ago, so will be done again next week.

thanks, sorry for hijacking thread op!

No she's not skinny, she has put on weight in two weeks, the vet checked her over on Thursday and said she was really healthy, but I'm going to change vets anyway, they are a lovely bunch of people, but not clued up on nutrition, they just seem to want to promote Hills!

Thanks for the reply, I have found a local company who stock Taste of the Wild, Orijen and Acana :) so I will change to one of those.

Hills is just awful, IMO. Im not surprised shes putting on weight: there are loads of unnecessary fillers in that food. Any of the green foods are good, choose via price and availability. Remember to swap foods really gradually so she doesn't react poorly.

I would def pop her to the vet in that case, it will not be the food causing that.
I am not trying to scare you, if there is mucus and blood and the poo is pale, she needs a check over ASAP.

Vet can't find anything wrong with her, she is a very lively puppy!, temperature normal, no more bloody poos as yet, but I have to feed her rice and chicken for the next few days then introduce the Acana gradually. She was wormed yesterday too.

Could be a cereal intollerance?. I put a few kibbles of Acana in with her Hills at tea time and breakfast and her tummy isn't bloated like before after a feed. Hills now going in the bin :)
