I am a mother of two eventing daughters. I tremble each weekend and await their texts to hear they are safely back after the cross country. So - I have offered to buy them both the best and toughest skull cap around - although I am not sure they will go for the ones with 'ears' promoted by Ruth Edge and Lucinda Green - any recommendations?

The gatehouse HS1 is supposed to have the best side impact protection, they also look really cool. Luckily they did fit my daughter so she has a shiny silver hat now.

The above is quite useful as it is totally independant research

Charles Owen APM is what I have, has good ear/head protection without being a full on motorbike helemt, again depends on head shape HS1 is very good safety wise but looked like a bowling ball on me!! whatever suits out of those two or champion ventair is good.

APM Helmet:

A specialist product whose design has been led by the legendary Champion Jockey AP McCoy. The harness is made of the softest leather and is perforated for breathability and to combat sweat build up. The harness has been widened to increase protection of the facial area which incorporates protective impact absorbing padding, whilst still retaining a slim line appearance. The harness at the nape of the neck has been dropped lower down but not far enough to interfer with the position of the head and neck. This section also contains an impact absorbant panel to BETA Level 1 Body Protector Standard. The APM is ventilated with four small discreet apertures. Fitted with a supersoft headband for comfort and softness against the forehead.
It is now filtering its way through to the Point - to - point riders and is also worn by eventers.

Extra details:

Manufactured and Kitemarked to BSEN 1384. Available in Sizes 1-4

I have both a Gatehouse HS1 and a Champion Euro A P McCoy hat - my doctor has informed me I dont need to have any more brain smashes (im good at landing on my head!) or concussions till in 30 - so a good 8 years to go!
I take comfort in donning both, the pros and prob some of the hardest NH jockeys ever cant be wrong.

i've got the Gatehouse HS1, it's very comfy and looks "normal". if you manage to find anywhere selling the Lucinda Green one, please let me know, mine fell off a high shelf so i need to replace it and no-one has them in stock. i really liked mine for xc, i had fitted my snazzy skull cover onto it and it looked pretty normal actually, quite a few people have asked whether it was comfy and where it came from... (you can see it in my siggy)
when i was a kid my mother always insisted i wore the best hat on the market (one of those daft-looking volvo ones), otherwise NO riding...!

I have the champion skull with ventair, it is brilliant and saved me when had very nasty fall to head other week, did the job brilliantly would highly recommend cause know they do work and do the job x

I have the APM one as it is the only one in the shop which fitted my head. I am really impressed with it, it is very comfortable and I feel safe in it, also I thought the padding on the straps would get too hot but it doesnt, I would definately recommend it.
