I've seen a few old threads here but I was wondering if anyone had any new tips or equipment for sleeping the night in a horse box?

We have a little two horse equitrek type box and we are planning to stay a night or two in it at a show during the summer. We will have electricity hook up so it will make it a little easier.

I was thinking camp bed but I was worried about the windows and a lot of light in the morning. I'm sure a eye mask would work though.

When I had my little 3.5 tonner I used a campcot inside a pop up tent which was in the horse area. I used tin foil to blackout the windows as I’m terribly light sensitive, it worked well!

I’ve slept in my trailer, I taped card over the windows, put card and an old rug on the floor and used a camp bed.

I taped black bin bags over the windows when I slept in the horse area of my 3.5t
Tarp on the floor, deep blow up bed, it was grand

I’d say yes you’ll want to put something over the windows. I got blinds put on mine as I planned on sleeping in it a fair bit and meant I could still open them in the day when warm in Summer. If less frequent / for one night then I’d say taping something over them should be fine.

You either want a camp / fishing bed or something to act as carpet if you’re putting your sleeping mat straight on the floor (if sleeping in horse area you probably want that anyway tbh)

I had 3 rear windows in my 3.5 box - 1 in door and 1 each side.
I screwed in a simple hook above each one, then on overnighters I popped a jacket/coat/jumper etc on a coat hanger and placed on hook which covered window nicely.
Measure 1st. Works a treat, you can leave a window part open this way too.
The little window from cab, I just hung a top on the hinge end of the partition, again that did the job.

Def a mat to stand on when getting dressed etc.
I took a single camping gaz ring with kettle, couldn't be without evening/ breakfast cuppa as often up before anywhere open.

My top tips:
Mat or clean rug to stand on (or tarp)
Eyemask to block out the light
Magnetic torches are handy so you can leave one in
Camp/fishing bed
Sandals/flip flops
A box or stoll as a little table to put things on

Some I know get hookup and then have leccy for heat/light/cooking charging etc but you'll need the right convertors to 13amp (which you can get cheap from Aldi)

Just trialled out the new system in rara’s box, the main original issue being that previously my ££ inflatable sleeping mat was too long to fit, luckily I found an alternative that fitted perfectly albeit narrower than I’d prefer. I had a sheet of thick black plastic underneath- I had cut this longer to protect the ends of the mat (particulate the shit stained end) what I hadn’t accounted for was protecting the end of my sleeping bag so I’d cut that longer and tape it up in future (I hashed it with a sports direct bag 😅). I did also have a cheap yoga mat underneath which I do in the tent too in case of ending up on anything sharp.

I actually slept better on the new mat than my old one despite it being smaller so considering buying the larger size for tent camping 😅. It’s a sea summit comfort deluxe. But it does depend how often you might use it to how much you want to spend. You could just get a topper/wodge of foam in space isn’t much of an issue while transporting

You can’t get really good outdoor rugs - I’d put that on the ‘non bed’ area.

I got a really good blow up chair that pulls out to be a single bed from Tesco which was really comfy. There was a sofa/double bed version too.

I have slept in a 3.5 tonne and more often a trailer for stay away shows. I don’t bother with the windows as I have to get up early anyway and the light doesn’t really bother me personally. A camp bed is 1000x better than an airbed in my opinion. Maybe it’s just because I’ve used cheap ones but I hate waking up with my butt on the floor because it’s partially deflated! My camp bed was cheap too and is squeaky if I move but comfortable. It’s definitely warmer if you’re off the floor. I sleep within 2 sleeping bags, and pop up some cheap battery lights from Amazon so I can see when I’m getting ready for bed. Also, snacks!

My vote for the sort of bed that gets you up off the floor; for me, it's so much warmer than an inflatable bed on the floor.
I'd never use a plain inflatable air bed, but self inflating foam ones are designed with a good R factor for insulation.
