I think George may have a slight cold, last week he had a slightly watery runny nose and on friday he coughed up a load of snotty gunk (sorry

), then as I posted last night he was coughing quite violently when I did anything more than trot and this morning he still has a slightly watery runny nose . He seems absolutely fine in himself, is eating well and his temp is fine. Should I give him some time off or just exercise him gently in walk and should I speak to the vet?

Thanks

Keep on monitoring his temperature, and rest him until he is fully recovered - working horses with respiratory disease can cause permanent damage. If the situation persists it might be worth getting your vet out to do a tracheal wash to investigate the nature of the inflammation. Have any in-contact horses shown similar signs?

Thanks for that, none of the other horses on the yard have any symptoms. I am wondering if it is dust in the new hay (very green and stalky hay), so I am going to give him a few days off and also soak his hay and feed it from the floor, as well as making sure he is out of the barn when I muck out fluff up his hay etc.
