This morning my boy had a slight heat in his offside hind, no obvious swelling, though alwyas had has a slight puffiness on this leg since I got him but there was no additional swelling... Trotted him up and looked fine so rode him gently in the school, walk and trot only, large shapes etc, no tight turns, felt fine....am I a bad Mum for riding??!! Should I have let him rest (just had 8 weeks off with an abscess on another foot so am keen to crack on. Hosed fetlock after session, no swelling and then turned him out. Was going to cold hose later and banadage over night for support. Any ideas, advise or even telling off welcome, did I do the right thing?

I would have done the same I think, if he had trotted up ok to start with. I don't think rest is always the answer, and that hacking / light schooling can be better for them as it gets the blood flowing.
I don't think you're a bad mum!

If we decided not to ride when there was slight heat then we would always have an excuse to get out of it

By the sound of it you are so much in tune and aware of your horse that if you felt there was something really wrong you would have given him the day off, so you are not a bad Mum

I agree i would have done the same.
TBH I think I would just leave it overnight & see how it is tomorrow. Light work won't do any harm if he's sound.
My boy had a warm foot on & off for about a week, I carried on with light work as he was showing no signs of lameness. Turned out he had a slight bruise (which is what I thought it prob was) which had come out by the time he was shod.
Def not a bad mum!

i think if you trotted him up and he was fine there is no need to keep him in; i always decide if they injure themselves and they are sound, i always turn them out and treat them as usual (aswell as sorting out their injury of course!) but i think that if you keep them in etc. then a simple injury that would have corrected itself overnight could get worse if they r kept in - cus they wud get stiff (well my horse wud neway...so hes better turned out...)
