Slight nose bleed

My horse had a slight trickle of blood coming from one nostril when I got him in from the field today. This also happened about 6 weeks ago. I bathed it, couldn't see any scratches in the lower part of the nostril. Any ideas what may be causing it?
 
My old mare has occasional nose bleeds, more of a tiny drip than a trickle. She can just get them standing around in field, in the stable, anytime.
She just seems to get them! Have never been a problem nor a reason for a problem.
But saying that nose bleeds shouldn't be ignored. At least monitor and take note of when he has them and which nostril. Consulting your vet may be wise until you know they are of no threat.
