Went up to feed my boy this morning to find hed pulled off his off fore shoe last night- he only got shod last monday!
This has been going on for a few months now and my farrier is having to come out at least once between appointments to put the lost shoe back on- and its always the same front one.
It seems he is losing it by putting his foot through the fence (and then presumably pulling back). I had over reach boots on him in the vague chance that might help, but they rubbed his fetlock on the off fore,so had to take them off for a bit- 2 days later, hes lost the shoe!
Im at my wits end, and not really sure how to solve this problem, im perfectly happy with the job the blacksmith is doing but theres not much I can do to stop him putting his foot through the fence (I keep him with family friends and so cant really put electric taping or anything up as the fields arent mine).
One thing is definitely for sure though- if this keeps happening he is gonna have no foot left, and my bank balance is gonna start suffering!
Rant over, any advice would be great, otherwise well done for getting to the end of this!

What about some fluffy eskadron over reach boots? (Yes he'll look like a dressage pony for all of about 5mins til they are covered in mud but may stop the rubbing)

I had the same problem - ISH with very crumbly feet that didn't hold shoes well. Overreach boots did really help, he hardly ever loses one now. Also foot supplements to strengthen the hoof - I use a biotin supplement.

Have you tried softer overreach boots made of neoprene or with sheepskin around the top?

yeah, I think im gonna have to get some over reach boots back on ASAP, not sure if they are making a difference since it seems to be the fence pulling the shoes off, but maybe the bulk has been stopping him getting his foot through.
Bloody horse, have had him over 3 years and hes never done this till recently. Plenty grass in the field and hes got company so I cant think hes bored etc

My old boy used to regually loose one or two shoes within a period of a couple of weeks of being shod - we put him on a hoof supplement (think it may have been the naf one but it was a few years ago so I can't be sure and it worked wonders, he never went under 4 weeks before loosing a shoe, and usually went 6 weeks fine! The cost of the supplement worked out as cheaper than the cost of getting the farrier out every couple of weeks, and it certainly made his feet more healthy, so it was a win-win situation.

If the overreach boots are rubbing could you perhaps trying gluing or velcro-ing in some sheepskin on the inside of the boots that are against the skin as it may stop the rubs and as sheepskin is a natural fibre it should be kind against his skin and allow it to breath?

I know you said the fields belong to family friends but wouldnt they just mind you putting one strand up the fence line (doesnt have to be electrified) just to keep him away. We just put a single strand about 3ft away from the neighbours fence as the difficult one likes to eat his newley planted hawthorn through the gaps. They dont go near it as they know its electric fence (even though its not on) and its just far enough away so that they cant reach. Also i had the same problem as you D was throwing a shoe about every 5 days for a few monts but have had him on biotin, a cube of red jelly and effol his hooves every day and its made a big improvement. *touches wood* he's back up to regular shoeing intervills now depending on what time of the year it is.

Not much i can add, as its not something a farrier can really help you with. With horses that pull their own shoes off is to put up fencing so they cant reach the fence they are pulling the shoes off on.
