My boy (25 years young) has definitely dropped a bit of weight this past month or so. He looks well, and is well in himself. He is just a little bit sunken in in the are in front of his hip if that makes sense. I can just feel his ribs but not see them which will be perfect going into spring, I’d just like a little more condition over the backend if possible but I may be being picky. 🙈 I’ve had a Google and it says it could be dehydration but not sure what I think about that as he drinks a reasonable amount and isn’t doing much work at the moment.

I have the Vet coming next week to do his teeth so will discuss with them possibly but hoping it might be that he is just due a teeth rasp. He is up to date with worming, is on ad-lib hay at night and grass during the day, is rugged up well and has two feeds a day currently of spillers conditioning fibre, pony cubes and sugarbeet so nothing massively weight gaining except for the conditioning fibre. I’m just about to switch the pony cubes for conditioning cubes and am adding a balancer in again in case it’s because he may be lacking in something. Any other ideas? I like to feed pretty naturally and keep to feeds with low sugar and starch as a rule as I think it’s better for their digestive systems.

Photo is him a few evenings ago. Tbh he looks pretty well in the photo and I may be worrying unnecessarily as I don’t want him carrying too much weight on his joints anyway but any feeding ideas to improve area of weight around hip is greatly appreciated. I know you can’t choose where the weight goes though as a rule..!

He looks great to me.

When we've had ponies a bit 'sunken' in the area you mention 'in the olden days' we would put some salt in their feeds to encourage them to drink more. As you say I've always thought of it as a sign of dehydration.

I also think if that area is sunken that it's a sign of dehydration. I don't know that I would put salt in the feed to encourage drinking though. I would check that everything was ok with the water and the water vessel though.

I can't see any sunkenness in your photo, OP, because it is filled with light.

My 26 year old dropped condition over the winter (I think mainly because our hay was not brilliant this year and he is not keen on it). I have put him on this https://www.spillers-feeds.com/senior-super-mash and Alfalfa oil (on advice of farrier who feeds it to an old pony). Looking very well on it and full of energy. Spiller’s nutritionalist also very helpful when I emailed.
