I've noticed over the past few weeks that Bob has slightly gooey eyes - looks like very mild conjunctivitis or similar? Nothing has changed in terms of stable, bedding, hay, turnout etc.

I was wondering about bathing them with cold tea? I have heard that is meant to help? And - serious question :) - is it just plain tea, or do you add milk?

my boy had gooey eyes a few weeks ago. i used optrex infected eyes drops (chloramphenicol) and it cleared up in a couple of days.

If you want to buy the above from a pharmacist DON'T say it's for a horse - you have to lie and say your OH has bad eyes and then tell them the symptoms. Not allowed to sell for animal use. This also worked a treat on our girl although we used the ointment rather than drops - easier to keep in the eyes.

CR Whisk quite often has gooey eyes, throw back to his days living in a barn I think, cold tea always works within hours for him. I use tea bags. A lot easier.

LOL I actually took the mug of tea out to the yard tonight with the tea bag still in, then tenderly bathed Bob's eyes with cotton wool :D Ah well, fingers crossed it clears up, otherwise I will get some eye drops and/or ask the vet :)

Thanks for the replies all :):):)

when approaching the pharmacist - make sure you mention discharge or gunk - then they hand you the drops and run off in the other direction!
it is about £5 quid a pop - but when your know your horse, and have had it a few times before - its cheaper than the vet call out!!

I know some people say dont ever mess about with eyes or feet - but im only taking about a little gunk - and luckily my vet is always on the end of the phone

I agree, Optrex infected eye or Golden Eye. Both work. A number of horses at our yard have recently had gunky eyes and this has cleared it up for everyone.
