slightly odd question but... why do dressage saddles have to be so heavy?

Just a musing really.

I am currently looking (in a fairly ad hoc way admittedly) for dressage saddles and they all weigh an absolute tonne.

What is it about them that means this is the case? When I compare one to my jumping saddle to look at I can't really work out exactly where all the extra weight comes from.

can anyone enlighten me? I should add I am not looking at ones with huge blocks as I don't like them so it isn't just that.

No idea but my new one is super light. I went from an old style resin Wow to a new equipe monoflap so something of the sublime to the ridiculous!
