My boy has nearly been barefoot a year now, but recently we have really been struggling with thrush - I don't know if it's because it's been so wet and we are on clay soil which just clags up in his feet?
Have been scrubbing with dilute iodine once or twice a week, and purple spraying the other times - it seems to go and come back again!
He has also become sore in front the past few days, he's walking fine out on the road and in the school is lovely but hacking out if he steps on anything it's like Owchie!!!! He's sore in trot on the road, just feels uncomfortable but he doesn't hesitate when you ask for trot. Could it be the thrush making him sore, spring grass, abscess?! I can't feel any heat or anything, am at a total loss - I don't really want to just put shoes on him because of this when he's been doing so well.
Please, any ideas?!

Could well be the thrush, have you tried any of the red horse products? I find the field paste is great for getting rid of thrush and keeping it away :) could be worth a try! I just put it on once a week now to keep it away but it can be used once a day to get on top of it to start with

Could you try him in hoof boots to hack while he's struggling a bit?

Could well be thrush. Can he go anywhere that his feet can dry out for a few hours a day? Hard standing area of turnout maybe?

I like the redhorse products too but to really zap thrush my favourite thing is "white lightening" (no, not the cider - if they even still make that, showing my age now.....).

Given the time of year I would definately be looking at diet. I find with my horse that if the thrush goes with treatment and then keeps coming back it is always diet related (like us with spots!).

Thanks - I got him some hoof boots but they are a bit too big and just sort of flap about, even with gaiters on!
Diet wise - he's on 1 Stubbs scoop speedibeet, 2 Stubbs scoops Alfa a oil, 2 mugs of linseed, 2 mugs of oats, codlivine supplement, seaweed and pro powder. He's a poor doing tb and it's been an uphill battle to get him to the weight he is now, he actually looks good for once! He's out everyday, and over night if it's dry, we have good cattle pasture and also hay in the fields.
Will have a look into the red horse products too
