So me and P went off for what was to be a nice long hack today...but less than an hour in, my horse started to feel 'odd'....now, I was worrying as she suffers from tying up and the horses are on restricted t/o at the mo so my immediate thought was that she was tying up again :(

Promptly got off and started to lead her to see if she would move (if she was reluctant, it would have been a big sign that she'd tied up again), and she seemed totally ok on her back legs/hind quarters but was lame..ish on her front right. P said lets walk back and even offered to swap and lead her while I rode his lovely ginger sausage :) But I felt I'd already b***ered up his ride so carried on walking.

Anyhoo...we were on a river path so no access for trailers, but I was starting to worry as she was definitely lame on her leg. No heat, swelling, nothing in hoof....really short on the front right and quite hobbly.
So we got to a section with a path to the nearest roundabout, phoned our YO and she arranged to cancel the lesson she was supposed to be taking () and came to pick us up.

Pedantic and the ginger one stood on traffic duty for us and went up and down the verge looking out for the trailer....the horses were brill with all the traffic coming around the roundabout and 1 couple even pulled over to see if we were ok.

Got her loaded, while poor old P and sausage had to set off home on their own (and by this time we were all very very cold). Although she was very short on the front leg and pottery, it seemed to improve when we unloaded her at home and still no heat, swelling or any other signs, in fact she seemed totally herself, so gave her a danilon and will see how things are in the morning...

But massive thanks to P and our YO who were both rocks....had I been on my own, I would have been a wimpering wreck!! Would have been totally stuck if our lovely YO hadn't bought her trailer, rug and headcollar down to pick us up too....

I hope your horse is OK and its nothing serious.

Hacking companions that can deal with events not going to plan without creating a drama are wonderful. Well done to Pedantic and his very well trained ginger boy.

Helpful YOs are wonderful too, it sounds like you're at a great place. :)

Things went well to start with, for saying the sausages hadn't been out together before, they went well together, not a single cross face or ears back,
loved the way She had her eye on the ginger one checking him out while trotting along :p

Yea, things didn't go to plan, but never one to see two Damsels in distress, me and the ginger sausage did our best, hopefully the lovely Spangle will be ok bless her, and we can do our planned ride another day :)

Thanks to Donna for coming to our aid costing her a lesson, what a brill YO :)

Its even nicer that your horse seems sound when you got home? A lot of people would be whinging that theyd wasted their time!
Well done pedantic for been a supportve tight wearing hack companion! :)
And YO sounds like a star too! :)

My horse did this out on a ride, significant lameness on one front leg, no obvious signs of injury and an improvement a couple of hours later. I wasn't happy about her though, so called my vet out to see her next day. She was sound next day, but my vet is very thorough and took a blood sample. She called me back as soon as the results came in.

Blood enzymes through the roof, massive azotoria.

She has suffered one bout of azotoria before, about 3 years previously. It was a classic case of tying up on the hind quarters.

This second case was completely different in that it was her front end, and one shoulder in particular, that was affected, not her hindquarters at all. It's not that common, but it's not unheard of.

If I were you, I would get the vet to run some bloods ASAP, just to be sure before you do anything with the horse that might cause further damage. And keep the horse in, rugged up as cold can do even more damage to already damaged muscles.

I have a vision now of P in tights!!v :eek::eek::D

Ihotse - the more I think about it, the more I think it could have been a strange tying up episode - however, she is absolutely fine this morning and has been fine out in the field. At no point has she been reluctant to walk or sweated up the way they do when they tie up....she doesnt appear lame or stiff at all today and is showing no signs of pain or discomfort. I checked her wee last night and it was perfectly normal.
So on that basis, I'm going to treat her as tho she has possibly mildly tied up and give her a week off work and bring her back into work very very gently....we've gone through this quite a few times before :(

Thanks everyone for the well wishes and thanks again to P and Donna!

Yep, mine was competely sound the next day, and my vet was out for 2 hours giving her a full workup to see why she was so lame. She was amazed when the bloods came back. Sounds like you know exactly how to manage it all though, so all the best to the little horsey!!

Yep, not an ideal place to be when you need transporting back home - good to have had P and the ginger sausage out 'traffic copping' for you and at least you all got back safely with not too much damage - hopefully Spang will make a quick recovery!
As you say, our YO is THE best - and everyone really supportive when you need help.

Hmmmm, try and go for less trauma in future tho! ;)
