Back in July my horse slipped the achilles tendon on her right hock. I was advised to keep her on box rest for 6 months. After about a month I had to turn her out into a very small pen part of the day as she was going stir crazy. About 3-4 months after the injury she managed to jump a 5 bar gate with no seemingly ill effects! Also my husband was very ill at the time so the decision was made to turn her out with the herd for the night and keep her in during the day. Her and my sanity greatly improved! However, its now 6 months on and she is still mechanically lame at walk and worse at trot. The hock has a large bulge about the size of half a tennis ball on the inside of the hock which you can press and doesn't seem to cause her any discomfort. I was told that the tendon had slipped to the outside so don't understand the inner bulge.
At the time she did the injury the vets advised me that the best scenario would be that she would be a light hack only. I thought I would wait until the Spring before getting the hock re-examined. I've got the feeling that they are going to say that she cannot be ridden again. Does anyone out there have any similar experiences? I guess I am looking for false hope! Would appreciate any replies. Thanks.
