I wonder if anyone has any idea to help me- About 4 years ago I purchased stable mats for about 6 stables - unfortunately without any research

- The mats are stuck down and im happy with them other than the fact that they are slippery (smooth surface on them) when wet - I was wondering would there be anything I could paint on them? or any ideas other than replacing them (and using more bedding)
many thanks

Mine are smooth on top (they are actually mayo cow mats), but are only slippy when used completely with no bedding.

I use them with full banks, and a 2" bed in the back half of the stable, and that is enough bedding to soak up any dampness.

WHen I used my spare stable as a day box for my TB when she had to stand in (it has no bedding at all) I was surprised how slippy the mats got with trampled over poo.

Hope this has helped.

Yes I think you're right there Fiona - I will just have to stop being so stingy with the shavings - just dreading the the extra cost the're going to put on them this winter!

Well I have 2 in at night and out during the day all year round (bedded like I described) and we use between 1 and 1 1/2 bales of shavings per week for both stables. Even at the vastly inflated price shavings are at the moment I don't think thats too bad.

They aren't particularly clean horses either (one slightly boxwalks, and the other pees for England

Good luck.

Are you sure you laid them the right way up? I bought basic mats - about £35 each 2 yrs ago - and they are bobbled on top for grip, channels underneath to drain wet away. Sunny is deep littered and has shavings at back 2/3rds of stable, mats at front 1/3rd. Never any slipping. Deep litter bed been down over 2 yrs and still as fragrant as a summer meadow!

Sprinkle some salt or put some rock salt on them. That's what I do on my mats by my horses water bucket in the winter and outside his stable. I recently founds some product in Aldi which was a discontinued line and is 'concrete friendly' and you can sprinkle it on the floor.

The mats were actually put down by the supplier - but as Fiona said they could be cow mats

Sand might be a good idea I think I'll try the salt and see how that does first.

I was actually wondering about a product from robinsons - you paint it on (think its for horsebox ramps) wondering how that would work ?

Again many thanks for the ideas

I would be inclined not to risk using sand as if your horses ingest some it can cause colic
