My horse has started slipping in walk, but only behind.

Started off on the roads, so my farrier is going to put road nails in, however last night he started to slip in walk when on grass out hacking.

It only happens in walk, not in trot or canter.

Admittedly the ground was a bit wet, so perhaps it was the conditions more than anything.

Could this be happening cos he is a bit lazy?

Any ideas?

Horse is 18 y o ISH in good health and reasonable fitness, hacked x4 and lunged x2 a week. Due to have lessons again soon.

Mt Tb used to do this, and it was due to pelvic problems and arthiritis of the hock - sort of a 'stiffness'.

Obviously mine was bad, but maybe yours is just a bit of stiffness due to age??

Maybe conditions though - the roads have been warmish and slippery for the time of year??

I think he does have some arthritis in the hock(s) and does start off quite stiff behind, but once warmed up there is no sign.

Did you do anything / could you do anything to improve it or was it just something you have to live with? Did it just get worse and worse?

Thanks Cob1

My Tb slipped on a little bridge one day going down hill, and he nearly lost his whole backend (i nearly died as my feet touched the floor)- it started to get a bit dangerous.

After this, and other schooling problems i had to get the vet out to assess him (mind you he started bucking and cow kicking when i put my leg on), he thought it might be KS (the hock problems were relatively insignificant at this point).

Combined with many other problems after xrays and scans the vet diagnosed KS, N and the pelvic problems, and he had to be retired (hocks were not the problem as such).

I would maybe get the vet to come and investigate - if its just hocks they can maybe try him on synequin or even the joint injections if thats all thats wrong.

Whats his impulsion like from the backend in general?

Has a tendency to be lazy but once working is fine.

Friend has suggested giving him an equine massage which may help to loosen him up.

May also put him on some cider vinegar too.

Apparently Bowen Therapy is fab for an all over check and treatment, it treats muscles and checks all alignments of joints etc.
